How to Not Fit in as a Freshie
Whether you’re referred to as a “freshie” or a first-year, you are still a freshman.
Upperclassmen often giggle when you walk by either because of the confused look on your face or by the lanyard you have around your neck with a Student ID hanging out.
Freshmen also feel the need to dress up or sport college paraphernalia whether going to class, heading to the dining hall or exploring their college town between classes.
Ashley, a waitress at Dahlonega’s Crimson Moon cafe, said, “I can always tell when a freshman comes in by the North Georgia t-shirt they’re wearing. It’s sweet, though, because they are showing pride for NGCSU.” Apart from NGCSU attire, at least 5 or 6 freshmen are decked out in Intro shirts on a daily basis.
When asked how she spots a freshman, Senior Taylor Spraggins said, “Especially during the first week of school, the freshmen all look so cute walking around campus in big packs.”
Senior Sarah Blevins said, “They’re not confident of where to go and they are unsure of where they are supposed to be.”
Intimidated by college life and the new challenges that come with living on your own, freshmen always flock to the dining hall, rarely going off campus for a change of scenery or something more appetizing than chow food.
Freshmen are generally in class at least 10 minutes early and with nothing but school work to occupy their time, freshmen are usually in their dorm rooms by 9 p.m.
At first, college can be quite frightening, but talk to the girls or guys on your hall and get to know one other. Talk to the upperclassmen and get tips from them on how to fit in with the college crowd.
Study hard, but enjoy college and create new friendships that really will last a lifetime.
It’s time to look at life from your own perspective and not through the eyes of your parents because this is your chance to go off and be who you want to be, make a name for yourself and carve your path in life.
When you follow these tips and take control of your life, you’ll find that you can completely avoid the “freshie” image.
