Avoiding clutter can be a struggle, especially for a college student living in a relatively small space. Finding creative and efficient storage solutions is a great way to ensure that you stay organized — which is important for a busy college student, as being disorganized can actually cost you quite a lot of time. In order to organize your space and ensure that it stays that way, check out some of the following storage ideas that you can implement in your home.

1. Make the Best of Under-Bed Storage

The space under your bed is valuable storage space, provided that you utilize it properly. Invest in some inexpensive rolling bins that you can hide under your bed, but easily roll out when you need them. These are perfect for storing away out-of-season clothes, so you don’t have all of your bulky sweaters taking up space in your closet all summer, or for storing items like seasonal décor. Since they’ll be tucked away under your bed, it’s probably better to use this storage for items that you won’t need to access all the time, so anything that you just want to tuck away for a few months can go in here.

2. Use Decorative Bins

One fun way to get more storage space in your home is by using decorative bins to stow away smaller items. This is a great solution for storing items like chargers and cords that you don’t want sitting out, but need to be able to access on a fairly regular basis. You can store the bins on a shelf so that everything is within easy reach, and they’ll double as decoration. You can usually find inexpensive storage bins online or at craft stores, and you can even get a variety of sizes to stack up if you need a lot of extra storage.

3. Try Stackable Hangers

If your closet space is limited (which, unfortunately, tends to be the case in most college spaces), stackable hangers can be a life-saver. They’ll allow you to hang up multiple items of clothing without taking up all of the space horizontally in your closet. This is also a great way to help you keep your clothing organized, as you can use stackable hangers to keep certain types of clothing together. That way, you’ll have room for everything that you need in your closet, and you’ll be sure that it’s easy to find.

4. Use Plastic Storage Drawers

If you need extra drawer space but don’t want to spend money on buying an actual dresser, one great solution is to purchase inexpensive plastic storage drawers. You can tuck them away in your closet so they’re not out in the open, and they’re great if you have some surplus items from your dresser that need to be tucked away. Storage drawers are also a great solution if you need a place for your desk supplies, old papers that you want to keep but don’t necessarily need to have out, or smaller household items that you don’t have a place for. They won’t break the bank, and you can stack the drawers on top of each other so they don’t end up taking up a ton of space in your dorm or apartment.

5. Take Advantage of a Cork Board

If you have a lot of jewelry and accessories that you have trouble keeping organized—and especially if you have trouble keeping your jewelry from getting tangled—one great solution is to use a cork board as storage. In addition to keeping your necklaces from getting jumbled up together, hanging them up on a cork board can also serve as a decoration if you hang up your favorite pieces—plus, it’ll be easy to see them when you’re deciding what to wear in the morning!

6. Use Your Suitcases for Storage

As a college student living in a confined space, suitcases can be a major pain. They take up a lot of space, and they’re hard to store away. Fortunately, suitcases can also serve as a makeshift storage solution for any out-of-season clothes, old books, or anything else that you want to have around but don’t necessarily need to access on a regular basis. Since they’ll be taking up room in your space anyway, you might as well put your suitcases to good use and take advantage of the storage that they can provide. If you have room under your bed, that’s the perfect place to tuck your suitcases away. Make sure you leave the handles facing out so you can easily access the items you’ve stored inside!

Finding storage when you’re living in a small space can be tough, so sometimes you’ll have to get creative to make sure that everything has a place. Staying organized is essential when you’re a busy college student and can’t afford to spend time fishing through piles of stuff to find what you need, so it’s worth taking some time to figure out the best way to store everything. Fortunately, by implementing a few simple storage solutions, you can keep your place organized all semester!
