If you live on your own, there are certainly many advantages to your solo living situation. For one thing, instead of worrying about sharing your apartment with a roommate (or multiple roommates), you get the whole space to yourself. That gives you plenty of opportunities to do with your apartment what you want.

Understandably, though, living by yourself can sometimes be a little lonely. Coming home to an empty apartment can also feel strange, especially if you were used to living with a lot more people before and have just recently moved into your own apartment.

The good news is, there are many ways you can go about making your apartment feel more like home. Read on for some ideas and suggestions on how to transform your living space into something you’ll feel proud to call your own.

1. Decorate.

A big part of making your apartment feel like home is decorating. No one wants to come home after a long day of school or work to a bland, undecorated apartment.

Instead, invest your time in making the space your own. Come up with a vision for what you want everything to look like — from your bedroom to the bathroom to the kitchen. Having an overall idea of your vision will make things easier for you when you go out to purchase the materials you’ll need.

Thinking about each room individually can be helpful too. For the kitchen, you might want some cute magnets to put on your fridge or a vintage ceramic cookie jar to place on the counter. If you have a living room space, you could consider putting down some area rugs and choosing furniture like a sofa and coffee table that suit your style.

Essentially, decorate based on your personal preferences and how you’ve generally decorated in the past. Maybe you’re not going for the same vibe as your former college dorm room, but you might want to keep constant some elements that are important to you — a favorite quote that you can hang up on the wall, for instance, or some colorful throw pillows that you’ve had for a while.

2. Put up pictures.

Part of decorating is putting up pictures around your place. After all, pictures are worth a thousand words and can transport you back in time to certain places, people, and things from your memories. Seeing reminders of your closest friends and family throughout your apartment can also make it feel a lot more like home.

Place pictures in every room, especially your bedroom and living area if your apartment has one. Even if you want to hang up pictures in your bathroom and kitchen, go for it! They don’t all have to be photos of friends and family, either — they can be pictures of anything that makes you happy when you look at it, such as nature scenes or photos of places you’ve visited.

3. Make your bedroom your own.

Arguably the most important room in your apartment is your bedroom, because it’s where you sleep and probably where you spend the most time when you’re not out. In other words, it’s your safe haven! That means you’ll want to make it as cozy and welcoming as you possibly can. Make your bed a designated place of rest and relaxation by choosing some comfortable blankets and pillows. And don’t forget to decorate the rest of your room so that it truly reflects home to you, whatever that may mean.

4. Set up multiple chairs around your dining room or kitchen table.

This one might seem a little strange, but it’s helpful. If you set up multiple chairs around your kitchen or dining room table, you will be creating a space for potential guests to join you. Even if you do end up eating on your own most days, it’s comforting to know that you have the option to invite others over for a meal every once in a while.

5. Make friends with your neighbors.

Since living on your own can start to feel a little lonely at times, it’s definitely a good idea to reach out to those around you. Resist the impulse to hide away in your apartment alone, and instead go out to make new friends. Particularly since you live in an apartment complex, you are surrounded by many other people who may be living alone as well and who may want to be part of a community.

Make a conscious effort to get to know those around you, which can sometimes be as simple as saying hello or good morning to someone in passing in your building. While it might seem a little scary at first, you’ll be a better person for going out on a limb and introducing yourself to your neighbors.

There are so many ways to make your new apartment yours — you just have to take advantage of it. Before long, your apartment will truly feel like home.
