The start of a new school year can be a fun and exciting time for a multitude of reasons. You finally have your dream class schedule. You are one term closer to graduating. Or, you are moving into a fresh and new living space that is full of endless possibilities when it comes to decorating it.

Regardless of whether or not your living space is new or just desperately needs a reset, consider decorating with school spirit just in time for the new school year. If you aren’t sure how to go about decorating with school spirit without looking like the campus bookstore threw up in every room of your apartment.

Take a trip to your campus bookstore for inspiration (Maybe pick up a thing or two)

Don’t be afraid to take inspiration from the one place on campus that specializes in school spirit. Browse your own campus bookstore for some inspiration on what kind of pieces you’d want in your own room. Maybe a pennant to show off your school or major, or a stuffed animal of your school’s mascot to proudly display on your bed or couch.

Decorations aren’t limited to your living room, trying decorating with school spirit when it comes to your kitchen as well. Pick up a few shot glasses with your university logo to complete your apartment’s makeshift bar, or a couple of coffee mugs to set up next to your coffeepot for a touch of school spirit.

Be mindful of what is worth the buy and what isn’t. Do you necessarily need that snowglobe with your school’s mascot inside? Not really. Pick and choose what works best for your living space when shopping around your college bookstore.

Make your accent colors your school’s colors

You don’t necessarily have to go on a shopping spree in your campus bookstore to make your apartment full of school spirit. Decorating with school spirit can be done in minimalistic style if you choose your decor’s accent colors as your school’s colors.

For example, if your school’s colors are blue and yellow, you may want to consider throwing pillows with blue and yellow on your couch to add a touch of school spirit without making an eyesore. If you have somewhat neutral bedding, you can try the same idea with adding pillows or throw blankets that have your school colors.

Decorating with school spirit definitely does not have to be obnoxious if you try adding small splashes of your school’s colors.

Make a memorabilia accent wall to fill up empty space

Have an empty wall in your apartment that you aren’t quite sure what to do with? Instead of filling it by throwing up the typical tapestry, make your own campus memorabilia wall full of school spirit. Decorating with school spirit can become personal when you tie in your own school experiences into your living space.

Those school-related pennants you saw at the campus bookstore? Consider buying one to start off your memorabilia wall. Stick mementos of your time in college on the wall: tickets stubs for games or other campus events, school newspaper articles you may have been featured in. The possibilities are endless when you have the ability to decorate with anything that holds value to you.

When it comes to getting more personal, collect and print photos that you have taken with your friends during different moments of your college career. It can be of your friend group together at a campus event, or even at a typical hang-out. Anything that reminds you of why you love your campus is a great thing to put up on your very own memorabilia wall.

DIY your way into decorating with school spirit

Who needs the hefty price tag that comes with many of the items you will find in your campus bookstore? Definitely not someone with a small college student budget. One small item may not hurt in the long run, but buying several items to throw around your apartment when decorating with school spirit may take a larger hit to your bank account than you may have expected.

Instead of buying everything you think would look good in your apartment from the campus bookstore, try your hand at DIY when it comes to decorating with school spirit. Instead of shelling out money for some decor pieces like a flag to signify your school spirit when you hang it on your wall, consider making your own.

Get ready for the chilly weather of fall and winter by making your own blanket to throw on your couch and/or bed. It doesn’t have to exactly feature your school’s logo but can feature your school’s colors to show off some school spirit.

Decorating with school spirit can be done in multiple ways and hopefully, there’s at least one method to match your style and budget this school year.
