5 Best Caribbean Restaurants in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is most known for its cheesesteaks and pretzels. However, a Porch.com study says that Philadelphia is also home to a variety of Caribbean restaurants, which is the most unique type of restaurant in the city. If you want to try something different than what the tourists are into, here are a few Caribbean restaurants to check out.

1. Freddy and Tony’s Restaurant

Freddy and Tony’s restaurant is located at 201 W. Allegheny Avenue. They serve a wide variety of Puerto Rican favorites, including pastelillos, mofongo, habichuelas, and pernil. They have been in business since 1980 and have been wowing guests with their food and service since. Freddy and Tony’s opens at 9:30 daily, including weekends.

2.  Reef Restaurant and Lounge

Reef Restaurant and Lounge, located at 605 S. 3rd Street, is home to classic Caribbean food with an American twist. They are also known for their aquarium-like décor. Along with their food menu, they boast a wide menu of wine and specialty cocktails. Reef is open for dinner daily, opening at 4 p.m. during the week and at 3 p.m. on weekends.

3. Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar

Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar is located on 2nd Street in Old City. Philadelphia is their first restaurant, which opened in 2000, and they have since expanded to Orlando, Atlantic City, and Washington D.C. The restaurant serves a variety of Cuban dishes and hosts salsa dancing every Friday and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. They serve lunch and happy hour during the week, brunch on weekends, and dinner every day.

4. Mixto

Mixto, which calls 1141 Pine Street “home,” combines the flavors and hospitality of Cuba, Latin America, and the Caribbean into one restaurant. They are open for dinner and happy hour during the week and offer brunch on weekends. Along with their traditional Latin cuisine, Mixto also has a wide variety of wine, beer, and cocktails on their menu. Come hungry, as they are known for their large portions. According to their website, their most popular items include  Paella, Argentine Churrasco and Rotisserie Pernil.

5. Bar Bombon

Bar Bombon is located on 18th Street in the Rittenhouse Square section of the city. The restaurants serve traditional Puerto Rican dishes with a twist. Their dishes are vegan and are a huge hit, even for those who are not strictly vegan or vegetarian. They serve lunch, dinner, and brunch, and they have happy hour specials from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
