It seems like it all happens at once. One day you’re off to school or work and looking at your kitchen countertop, the next day what was once your countertop is now the newest subject in a Netflix mystery documentary- The Disappearing Counter. Every now and then, we all get caught up in the ebb and flow of life, whether its our job, our schoolwork, our family, our social life, etc. All of these external duties and responsibilities can sometimes force us to neglect the very place we call home, leaving it a complete mess.

Having a messy and unorganized home is sometimes the least of the greater worries and obligations that control and consume our lives, however, organizing your home can help you in the long run and contribute to a peaceful environment to unwind in after a long day. According to a blog post by PickupPlease.org, “ The National Soap and Detergent Association states that getting rid of clutter eliminates 40% of housework in the average home. It also reduces the stress associated with a disorganized living space. In other words, purging is a passageway for feeling more calm and clear-headed.”

Knowing these facts and recognizing the fact that a complete overhaul of your home is needed is the first step, and you may be asking yourself, “Where do I even start?” It’s completely common to feel overwhelmed and anxious about tackling this new goal, but I promise you its a lot easier than you think. When thinking about organizing and tidying up their home, most people tend to look at the big picture and want to work on a million different areas at once. The key is to start slow and steady, because after all, that’s what wins the race!

As stated earlier, organizing your home is not a task that can be accomplished all in one shot, though I know we all wish it was! Instead of trying to organize every spot in your home simultaneously, Elizabeth Larkin of the Spruce suggests an alternative way. According to Larkin, one useful plan is to start small, with storage spaces. She notes, “The idea is to create storage space before you tackle the rooms you use most often. This way when you move on to the rooms and spaces you use most, there will be storage space available.”  Using Larkin’s suggestions, here are some effective and easy ways to organize your home- whether it be storage spaces, shared spaces, or personal spaces!

Storage Spaces:

Storage spaces are at the top of this list due to the simple reason that organizing and de-cluttering requires spaces to put certain items. If you have junk filled drawers and closets, you won’t have a spot to put anything! Storage spaces include storage closets, attics/basements, the garage, and the dreaded junk drawers.

For Junk Drawers: Organizing your junk drawer is super easy! Places like Bed, Bath and Beyond sell drawer organizers just for this purpose! Get one of the organizers and put items like keys, pens, tools, charging cables, etc. in the little compartments to make for a cleaner drawer!

Shared Spaces:

Shared spaces are next and include places like the kitchen, the bathroom, living area, etc. These are spaces that are out in the open, to be enjoyed by multiple people.

For the Kitchen: Keep countertop clutter to a minimal (this is where drawer space and cupboard/pantry storage come in handy), hang pots, pans and large utensils on pegs, and keep similar items together for easy access and hassle-free cooking!

For the Bathroom: Get rid of old soaps, shampoos, and anything that is cluttering your bathroom area. Next, get some drawer/shelf organizers to help sort through various products in your vanity or medicine cabinet. Finally, put all cleaning supplies in a small cubby so they are easily accessible when you need them!

Personal Spaces:

Personal spaces are where you spend your time without the company of guests or friends, like your bedroom or home office.

For the Bedroom: One great way to organize your bedroom is to purchase bed risers to lift your bed frame, then store clothes, books, bedding, etc. in plastic containers! Because of the risers, they’ll conveniently fit underneath your bed, leaving you much more space and organization in your room!

For the Office: Desk organizers and floating shelves are great ways to clear up space in your office. Put important items, books, pictures, etc. on floating shelves to free up space on your desk and get organizers to hold important documents, office supplies, and files to make your desk workable again!

Giving your home that organized overall may sound stressful and tedious, but in the long run, it will motivate, inspire and push you to maintain a neat and clean home in the future. Furthermore, it will instill the confidence in you that you can conquer the sometimes scary task of de-cluttering and organizing your home no matter what! Just remember to be patient and go with what works best for you. As always, good luck!
