If you’re getting tired of the same old bedroom you’ve always had, it may be time for an upgrade. There are many ways you can go about updating your personal space — perhaps your bedroom at home is in dire need of a makeover, considering you haven’t taken down the grunge rock band posters you’ve had on your walls since you were fifteen. Or maybe you want to make some alterations to your dorm room at school and just need a few recommendations. Whatever the case may be, there are certainly a number of fun and affordable ways you can spruce up your room to make it what you want it to be.

1. Paint the walls.

One simple yet effective way to change up the dynamic of your room is to paint the walls a different color. Maybe you want to transition from boring eggshell white walls into a more vibrant, deep ocean blue to give your room some pop. Or maybe you’re faced with the opposite problem, having had bright green walls for most of your childhood and now just want something more neutral and calming (like the aforementioned white walls). Whatever your heart desires, simply grabbing a paint can and a paintbrush or roller can do wonders for transforming your room — without expending too much money or effort on your part.

2. Rearrange the furniture.

One super affordable way to update your room — as in, requiring no monetary expense whatsoever — is rearranging the furniture in your room. Depending on how many pieces of furniture you have and how big your room is, moving the furniture around can become a fun challenge, like putting together a puzzle. Experiment with the layout of the furniture according to the shape of the room; you could even take pictures of the room with the furniture in different positions to compare and determine what looks best to your eye. Thankfully, this is not a time-consuming process and can actually be a great way to bond with your friends if you get them all together to help you out.

3. Get new furniture.

Another great option is to replace your old bedroom furniture with new ones. Although perhaps a bit pricier than simply rearranging your existing furniture, getting new furniture doesn’t have to break the bank. Check out your local furniture stores, as well as online sites such as Amazon, to search for some affordable options.

4. Get new bedding.

A very simple and inexpensive way to add some pizzazz to your bedroom is to change your bedding. Ordering a new kind of bedding, whether it be a different color or an entirely different pattern, can be a big help in changing the dynamic of your room.

5. Fill your room with things that make you happy.

Personalizing your room with things that make you happy — from posters to wall art to tapestries — can help update your bedroom vibe a great deal. What’s more, covering your room in what you love can increase your mood every time you enter your personal space.

6. Experiment with becoming a minimalist.

Something fun and affordable you can definitely experiment with is getting rid of unnecessary furniture and accessories in your room, so that it can at least feel less cluttered. Not only is this inexpensive, but it may even allow you to earn more money by providing you the opportunity to sell any extra belongings you may have lying around. Cleaning up your personal space will hopefully allow you to feel more at peace and relaxed in a less cluttered environment.

7. Create a reading nook.

If you enjoy reading in a quiet, comfortable space, creating a reading nook of some sort may be a great way to spruce up your bedroom. If you have the space, or if you can manage to clear a large enough space, throw together some comfy materials such as throw pillows, large chairs, beanbag chairs, blankets, and perhaps even a bookcase to create the perfect reading corner. If possible, try to choose a part of your room that is most exposed to natural light so that you can read during the day. If not, you may want to invest in a floor lamp — or some kind of light fixture — that will provide a good deal of light for when you stay up reading late into the night.

Ultimately, there are many ways you can go about upgrading your bedroom so that it reflects who you are and what you love. The best part is that you don’t have to spend a fortune or expend too much effort making these changes — they are so simple and fun that you’re sure to enjoy yourself!
