College is a great time for free expression and exploration of your individuality. It is your time to find out what makes you happy, what makes you sad, and most of all, what makes you you. The way you dress, what you study, even what you eat are all expression of your identity. But a further extension of your creativity is what your bedroom looks like.

You most likely do not have a lot of time to put towards decorating your room and probably not a lot of money to go towards decorating it either. But as you find yourself, the way you want to express and present yourself to the world will change. So as you change, how can you change your bedroom, your own personal shrine and sanctuary, so that it can better reflect who you are? Read on to learn some simple and inexpensive ways to give your bedroom a makeover!

Rearrange the Furniture

A simple first step to giving your room a makeover can be to rearrange your furniture. Sometimes it is not about buying all new stuff to replace what you have. Instead, it is about mixing up what you do have to make it work! The layout of your room might be too boring now that you have grown used to it. Switch it up! Move the furniture around so that you’re just a little bit thrown off when you first enter the room and so that it is a little bit more exciting to go in.

Maybe you were never in love with the set up of your room, but once the school year started you resigned yourself to how it was since there was no time to fix it. Maybe as the year has progressed you have added more furniture you grew to need, like a shoe rack or a desk, and now the room just is not organized and laid out in quite the right way. Well now is the time to change this! Make the time if you did not have it before. Make changing the layout of your room a priority. If you need help moving something heavy, like a bookcase, have someone come and help you. Get it done!

You can also consider some feng shui principles when rearranging the furniture in your room that might help to give you some ideas on how to rearrange it, and then not only to rearrange, but to improve your quality of sleep and life as well.

Bed placement is key, since it is the source of your rest and restoration. There are many rules about the placement of beds but finding the perfect bed placement will help you to live a more fruitful life. For example, your bed should be placed against a solid wall. Your bed should also be situated diagonally from your bedroom door. This will help you be able to see when people enter your room, which in turn will help you to sleep more restfully and stress-free at night. You should not place your bed directly opposite the door, in a place known as the dead man position. It is called this due to the fact that when your bed is placed so, then you have your feet or head pointed directly through the door which is symbolic of how the deceased are carried through doorways.

Of course, you cannot always follow every feng shui principle, but you can often find compromises that will still improve your quality of life. To get a great rundown on how to follow the principles as well as find compromises within them, check out Feng Shui Bed Positioning.

Put Up Some Art

Another great way to give your bedroom a makeover is to add some color and put up some art. It can be hard because you often cannot paint the walls of an apartment you are renting, so you cannot express yourself in that way. And you often cannot put nails in the wall or do anything that will damage the wall in order to decorate and express yourself. But there are many alternatives now like Command Hooks that allow you to hang things on the wall without damaging it.

And there are so many options for what you can hang on your wall. You can make your own art, which is a lot of fun. You can put up photos of your family and friends, of distant lands you have gone to and others that you have not yet but one day will. You can put up posters of your favorite movies, your favorite books, your favorite artists. You can reprint the paintings of your favorite artists—and if you want a cheaper option to print out full wall-sized murals without breaking the bank, check out The Rasterbator, which allows you to put in any image and then design its layout to any size you want via any size paper and of any orientation.

Get out there and get inspired! Let your room express the true you and give it a makeover that will help you make the most of your time in college.
