6 Summer Activities to Get You Out of the House

By Tyler Nicol on June 26, 2018

Summer is here and most college students are home for the next few months. Whether you are busy with a summer job, online class, or you have a lot of free time, summer can be boring at times. You may be wondering about what fun things you could do to pass the time.

Instead of sitting around at home, here are some things you can do:

1. Exercise

Exercising is a healthy way to spend your free time in the summer. Working out has many physical benefits, such as getting your body ready for your upcoming vacation. It also has mental benefits and is a great way to relieve stress.

If you are not used to exercising frequently, the biggest challenge is often convincing yourself to get out and do it. Fitness guru and actor Bruce Lee once said, “if you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.” Regularly exercising may be difficult at first, but the results are worth it. You can start with small routines that adhere to your goals and work up from there. There are many helpful beginner routine guides that you can find online.

After thinking about your goals and finding a routine, you can start by signing up for a local gym membership or going for a run in your neighborhood. It helps to have a workout partner that can motivate you along the way. Talk to others who are more experienced in the field of fitness and often, they will be glad to give you tips and advice.

2. Pick-Up Sports

Although there are not many organized sports leagues for college kids back home, you can still be active and have fun by finding some pick-up games. Look into parks and other popular outdoor places in your area where people play sports. If you have a gym membership or go to a fitness center, there are usually plenty of people playing indoor sports as well.

If you are looking for something more competitive, you may be able to find adult leagues in sports such as soccer, softball, or basketball. Typically, churches and fundraising events will have short-term leagues that you could play in.

3. Hiking

Another activity that you can do in the summer at little-to-no cost is hiking. Look up local parks to explore the different types of trails in your area. Some parks may charge an entrance fee or parking fee, but they are usually pretty affordable.

Hiking may feel like a workout, but it can also be relaxing. Choosing mountain trails with overlook viewpoints will make for a rewarding experience once you get to the top. You can also try to find trails with swimming spots.

Hiking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, just make sure to do your research first and find the hiking experience that fits what you are looking for.

4. Fishing

Unlike the previous activities on this list, fishing is not very physically demanding. All you need is fishing gear, a fishing license, and a place to fish.

If you don’t already have fishing gear, you can find everything you need at a retailer or local sports store. You may even be able to rent fishing gear if you are looking to just try it out.

Once you have the right gear, you need to find a good spot to fish. You can look for lakes or ponds in your area that allow fishing. This may require testing different spots to see what works best. Some lakes or parks have fishing boats that you can rent, which could give you an opportunity to catch more fish.

5. Camping

If you are feeling adventurous and like spending time outdoors, camping is a good summer activity for you. Summer nights are best for camping because you don’t have to worry about it getting too cold.

It is safest to go to regulated campgrounds in your area. Campgrounds will often have other outdoor activities that you can do as well.

Get some friends together and, if no one has a tent, rent one from an outdoors store. Make sure to bring sleeping bags, extra clothes, and food.

6. Watching the Sunset

Watching the sunset is a relaxing way to end the day. Where you go to watch it depends on the views in your area. You could simply sit out in your backyard, or go somewhere more scenic.

You could combine this with other activities, such as going to a nearby lake or hiking in the evening time. This is a simple way to get out and enjoy nature, just make sure that the weather is right for it.

These activities should help you have a more active and adventurous summer. Most of these, you can do by yourself or with friends. There are many other college students looking for things to do in the summer, so if you are looking for others to do things with, reach out to old friends or try to meet new people with similar interests. The best way to have an eventful summer is to get out and try new things!
