The UK is to get a break from the record wet weather that has endured flooding after record amounts of rain from April through July.

According to a report from Britain’s Press Association, there are to be more downpours before the rain according to forecasters, but sun is to return next week.

The reason for why Britain has been having so much rain is because of the position of jet streams, which move across the Atlantic. Instead of being north, the jet stream is in the south, seeing the areas of the UK getting the record rainfall, according to a blog post on the news blog from forecasters at Britain’s meteorological agency the Met Office. “The jet stream, like our weather, is subject to natural variability, that is the random nature of our weather which means it is different from week, month or year to the next,” the forecasters wrote. “We expect it to move around and it has moved to the south of the UK in summertime many times before in the past. It has, however, been particularly persistent in holding that position this year, hence the prolonged unsettled weather.”

The UK’s Environment Agency (as of 4:25am UK time July 19/10:25pm CT July 18) have 23 flood alerts active, specifically in the English Midlands and the Anglia region, and Southwest and Southeast England. Because of the flooding, the A35 motorway in the English county of Dorset was closed, in addition to closures on some major roads in the UK, according to a report from the BBC.

Tom Tobler of MeteoGroup, the Press Association’s weather service, said according to the PA that once the jet stream finally moves north, it is to remain there.
