It is that time of the year again, everyone: spring! Like many of you, I’m sure, I am super excited for the onset of warmer weather, longer days, and more sunshine. Though it is just a shift of seasons, the transition from winter to spring can be a great opportunity to set or accomplish many goals that seemed unattainable during the harsh winter months. Perhaps you wanted to take courses during the summer, start applying now! Maybe you’re looking for a short or long-term job post-graduation, jump start your job search!

There is just something about warmer weather that is inspiring, motivating and mood-boosting and there is science to back me on this one! According to Kathryn A. Roecklein, an associate professor in the department of psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, “seasonal mood shifts often include less energy, feeling less social, losing interest in favorite activities, having cravings for carbs and changes in sleep; either having trouble sleeping or wanting to sleep more than usual.”

The lack of light and shorter days may explain why you were feeling more introverted than usual and less motivated to work during the chilly winter months. The spring weather, however, will surely get you out of that funk! One of the best ways to help uplift your mind and spirit during the warmer months is to slightly alter your living environment in small, fun ways. With this being said, why not take advantage of the seasons changing by giving your apartment a refreshing boost? Are you desperately ready for spring weather? Wanting a fresh start feeling in your apartment? Check out my three inexpensive ways to refresh your apartment for spring!

1. Declutter: Over the fall and winter months, I am guilty of accumulating a bunch of unnecessary junk ranging from old school papers/notebooks to textbooks. The hoard of junk during the cold months may be due to laziness or it may be accidental, but regardless of why you did, it’s a great idea to take advantage of the warm weather and clear out your place.

Grab a couple of large trash bags and discard anything that you haven’t seen or touched within the last few months (that doesn’t have significance that is) and toss it all out! You’ll feel so much better once you don’t have unnecessary papers, books, and trash lying around; plus it will give you that feeling of freshness that you’re desperately wanting!

2. Get in Touch with Your Green Thumb: Part of what makes the season of spring so beautiful is the blossoming flowers and plants. One way to freshen up your apartment is to put different kinds of plants throughout your kitchen, bedroom and living room areas! Not only are plants a beautiful decorative piece, but they also give your place that fresh, spring vibe.

According to Silvia C.of Daily Dream Décor, “[plants] help your home get more oxygen; they bring a happy mood into any space and help increase your work productivity.” You may be thinking to yourself, “Alicia I don’t have the time to worry about a silly plant”, or “Alicia I don’t have a green thumb, I’ll definitely kill this plant in no time.” I completely understand your concern, which I why I’ll suggest succulent plants to you! Not only are succulents inexpensive, but they are also super easy to take care of, even if you do forget about them for awhile!

3. Focus on your Bedroom: Of all the areas in an apartment, I feel as if the bedroom can be neglected from time to time. It’s easy to do this since, for the most part, most people don’t hang out or see your room. Because of this, letting your room become messy, unorganized and downright gross can be almost too easy. One great way to give your place a freshening up is to change up a few elements in your bedroom! Firstly, thoroughly washing all blankets, sheets and pillowcases will definitely make you feel fresh and clean (plus its hygienic).

Secondly, adding new lights such as a floor lamp or bedside lamp with bright bulbs can help to give you that feeling of being outside if you don’t have a lot of natural light available. Lastly, cute artwork can be a great way to revamp the vibes of your room. This can simply come in the form of motivational post-it notes like “today is a new day” or “you can do it!” If you like to be fancier, places like Target, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s have quality and inexpensive inspirational artwork that will make your room feel like it’s brand new!

Giving your apartment a spring boost may sound a little tedious, but in the long run, it will motivate, inspire and push you to accomplish any goals you set for yourself this year! Just remember to be patient and go with what works best for you. As always, good luck!
