Why You Should Join Applied Learning Experience If You Love Volunteering

By Gerrod Boothe on February 20, 2018

Applied Learning Experience (ALE) is an awesome student organization that sets up volunteer work and/or opportunities for the student body of Tarleton State University to get hands-on experience for students of a particular degree plan and any that want to further reinforce Altruism, Pure and Reciprocal, exists still to this day. Areas ALE cover include, but are not limited to: undergrad research, creative activities, service learning, leadership, cultural enrichment, internships and practicum, study abroad, and study within the United States.

Building strong connections and networks within local communities between said environments and universities will teach future leaders how to network to build strong connections and actually apply learned skills and education within each degree plan because everything that is learned can be used outside of respected Area(s) of Operation (AO) and learning environments. The question most students have is “Where and how will I use everything I am paying to learn?” and the most important lesson within these sectors of fire (so to speak) is “Why am I learning this (field of study) and what will I use it for?”

Tarleton State University: Midlothian Campus has spent days, months, and years building webs of connections between various local volunteer opportunities, with the likes of Paws for Reflection Ranch through the Psychology Department. Students who volunteer at the ranch assist by feeding and watering the barn of animals, prepping the saddles for horse rides, cleaning up the property, planting the thousands of Easter eggs for Special Needs children, and helping said children have an awesome Easter with like-minded individuals that are preparing to become Social workers, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Animal Behavior Experts. Although the rewards are readily spotted for all that are involved as an individual, ALE participants will be assisting in activities that are much greater than themselves.

The rewards for participating in a minimum of 10 hours in ALE events and opportunities include experience and instant and delayed gratification. Participating in the mandatory 10 hours of volunteering will allow the students to graduate with special recognition that will add a volunteer cord to their graduation gown and an additional identifier (authenticated stamp on the student’s paper diploma from the university).

Additionally, students will be able to add various ALE projects to their e-portfolios and resumes to market themselves to employers and graduate schools. However, these rewards are not why students volunteer and participate in ALE functions; it is the friendships created, channels networked that would not have been easily attainable as an individual, employers receiving the honor(s) to observe their future employee’s dedication to creating a better world.

Further, through ALE, you’re able to assist children with special needs in having an amazing time with students that truly care about others above themselves, and do amazing things for a world that truly needs and deserves people that ask what they can do for their country, not what their country can do for them. If you want to be a member of a group that sets out and achieves tasks that are much bigger than yourself, we in ALE are more than happy to welcome you into our pride and look forward to hearing your ideas for future projects.

Born Fort Carson, Colorado and grew up in Mannheim, Germany and Texas. Graduated high school at 16 because 9/11 happened four days before my birthday, which led me to leave for Basic Training at 17. Honorably discharged from Active Duty Army in 2013, where I began my new degree. Anything else you would like to know, feel free to ask.
