Hosting the Perfect Super Bowl Party

By Kaitlin Hurtado on February 2, 2018

Regardless of whether you are a football fanatic or not, the Super Bowl is the perfect opportunity to showcase your hosting capabilities by hosting your very own Super Bowl party. Take advantage of the entertainment that the Super Bowl provides to help shape your party as you have a valid reason to throw one – even if all of your friends aren’t the biggest football fans or aren’t fans of the teams facing off in this year’s Super Bowl.

It may be your first time hosting a Super Bowl party, or a party in general, but with these tips, you can host the perfect Super Bowl party for you and your friends.

Decorate and set the mood

Like all parties, decoration possibilities are seemingly endless, but not every budget will allow you to go all in on decorations specifically tailored toward the Super Bowl. Instead, try to stick with one theme and go for more affordable decorations that you can save for later parties. Since it is a Super Bowl party, try to incorporate the Super Bowl into your decorations. This Super Bowl is between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots, so you can create a color scheme based on one of the teams (or both).

If you are cheering for one team and know all of your guests will be cheering for the same team, go for the chosen team’s colors to help bring the team to your Super Bowl party. If your Super Bowl party will have fans of both teams attending, go for a balance of both teams’ colors or go for a more generic football theme for your Super Bowl party. Get some balloons, put up some streamers, or make your very own photo booth wall to help document your Super Bowl party and for your guests to use during commercial breaks.

Plan for plenty of food

What is a party without food? The thought of buying enough food and drinks for all of your Super Bowl party guests may have you and your wallet cringing depending on the number of people you are expecting, but you don’t have to worry because there are other options besides taking on the burden yourself.

One of the more obvious options is to call for a potluck so that your guests can help contribute to the Super Bowl party’s menu without breaking your budget. When it comes to making a successful potluck, make sure you can count on your friends to actually bring food because you don’t want to rely on them only to have them show up empty-handed and your Super Bowl party without food. You also may want to assign dishes/amounts to people so that everyone doesn’t show up to your Super Bowl party with chips and cookies and no actual food to fuel your guests throughout the party.

Another option is to carefully plan out your Super Bowl party’s menu in order to create a budget and successfully provide food for your guests yourself. Start off with easy snacks and appetizers that won’t break your bank – an assortment of chips and dip, a veggie tray, chicken wings (there are plenty of cheaper, frozen options that can taste as great as pricier, fresh ones). For main course options, you can go for a cheaper option like calling in to pick up pizza or go for something that is easier to make in bulk, like throwing hot dogs and other meat on the grill. The latter may not be the best option if you are living on campus, but many campus apartments or apartment communities offer community grills throughout the property or by the clubhouse for you to make use of.

Make the Super Bowl party interactive

Depending on how big of football fans your guests are, the game will be enough to have them entertained throughout the night, but for others, it may be harder to have a good time throughout the night if they can’t really follow along with the action of the Super Bowl.

While making brackets and bets isn’t the most original idea when it comes to the Super Bowl, you can put your own spins on the ideas to suit your party. If not everyone is cheering for the teams in the Super Bowl, make them pick a side by creating a dress code for the Super Bowl. One color for one team (of course jerseys and other team apparel if your guests have them) and another for the other team.

Going back to the photo booth wall idea, make use of a blank space in your living room, dining room, or hallway to create your own space for photo ops for your Super Bowl party. Get props like homemade banners with football lingo or team names, the Super Bowl teams’ apparel, or a football to make great photos to remember the perfect Super Bowl party you will be hosting. Go one extra step and buy a temporary Snapchat filter to document the best moments of your Super Bowl party to appreciate later.

These are just three tips to help you host the perfect Super Bowl party, but there are plenty more steps to host your perfect Super Bowl party when you know your guests and space best.
