5 College Essentials You'll Need This Spring Semester

By Alicia Geigel on January 9, 2018

Besides the free time to watch Netflix and sleep in late, winter break is the time we all revel in and use to rest and rejuvenate ourselves before the dreaded spring semester starts in a few, short weeks. There is nothing better than being able to spend time with family, use your time the way you want to, and not have to worry about the next essay deadline or test day. Starting up a new semester after a break can be difficult for many reasons and getting back into your normal rhythm of school is a struggle for just about everyone. A great way to prepare yourself for the spring semester is to invest in supplies and essentials that will be useful for you not only now, but also in the future!

I don’t know about you, but there is just something so exhilarating about getting a new, sealed pack of pens or a shiny new binder. Are you a student about to start school again in the spring semester but are not sure of what necessities you need to make the semester as smooth as possible? Check out my top five college essentials for the spring semester below and I guarantee you will wish you had these earlier!

1. Warm Clothes: There is nothing worse than having to brace the harsh, cold temperatures of the winter without the proper clothes to keep you warm. For a lot of students (myself included), it becomes hard to stay motivated during the colder months warm due to the fact that because its so cold, students do not want to leave the comfort of their dorm and apartment. All of this can be avoided, however, with a few great winter clothes essentials like:

  • A long (preferably puffy) winter coat with a hood
  • Gloves and Scarves
  • Warm socks
  • A Beanie

2. Updated School Supplies: A great way to motivate and prepare yourself for the spring semester is to invest in new school supplies! You would be surprised, a fresh new notebook or a backpack can completely change your attitude toward school and learning! For me personally, my notebooks and folders always get thrown around and tore apart, so I always get excited about new supplies like these! The greatest thing about investing in these necessities is that its not expensive, you can get them at a range of places like Walmart to the Dollar Tree! Basic school supplies to stock on can include:

  • Notebooks
  • Pencils/Pens
  • Sharpies/Highlighters
  • Binders/Folders

3. Food from Home: Who doesn’t love snacks that remind you of home like homemade baked goods? As you plan for the spring semester, be sure to pack up food to stock up on during the semester like canned goods, chips and crackers, granola bars, cereal, etc. Not only will doing so keep you covered on those hungry days, but also, depending on what you decide to bring, it can be a little piece of home to have when you are feeling homesick!

4. New Charging Cords/Earbuds: As people who are mostly dependent on technology, having charging cords that work is a necessity, so be sure to bring whatever one you may need for your phone/tablet so you are covered for the semester. Additionally, as someone who is constantly listening to music on my way to class, studying in the library, working out, etc. I know that life is not the same without functioning earbuds. If you are lacking in the earbuds department, be sure to invest in a pair and remember to bring them for the spring semester so you won’t have to endure long homework or study sessions in dreadful silence!

5. Relaxing Items for Those Stressful Days: College is full of stressful moments and weeks, which can leave us all on the brink of a mental breakdown. Every once and a while, we all have to indulge in some relaxing things to help get us through the semester. Whether or not you like movies, books, baths, meditation, etc. be sure to have a few items to help calm you down and keep you grounded during the semester. These can include:

  • Essential Oils & Diffuser
  • Bath bombs
  • Favorite Movies/TV Shows
  • Music
  • Favorite Books
  • A warm blanket
  • Cozy pajamas

Though no one truly gets excited for a new semester of school, having the right essentials and necessities can make you more motivated and inspired to be productive and make the most of the rest of your year. Just the smallest of things can completely change your outlook on your ability to succeed and your potential to grow! Perhaps the greatest piece of advice I can offer is to pay close attention to your likes and interests to help you find out what specific necessities you need! Regardless if you are just starting off as a freshman or are about to finish college, these tips will keep you fresh and motivated for the spring! As always, good luck!
