5 Ways to Challenge Yourself in 2018

By Chelsea Gilmore on January 3, 2018

As 2017 comes to a close and a new year is on the horizon, News Year’s resolutions can start to seem overwhelming. The commonly used phrase “new year, new me” is an accurate description of what people typically go through going into a new year. As I’ve reflected on this past year, I have come up with challenges, rather than resolutions, to take into 2018.

Find a hobby

I recently started to crochet and find it enjoyable. It’s something I can do during my downtime while watching TV or listening to music. Challenge yourself to try something new. Odds are, if it’s something you’ve been wanting to try for a while, you may actually enjoy it. Rather than binge-watching a new TV series, try something that interests you like calligraphy, a sport, reading, etc. Hobbies are also a great way to meet new people that share your interests.

Do something you love

Similar to finding a hobby, doing something you love challenges you to make time for yourself. For example, I’ve challenged myself to start reading more. It’s something that I’ve always loved but often find excuses not to do it. I get it; everyone has busy lives and it can be difficult to find time. However, doing something you previously loved doing may make you happier overall and enjoy the time you get to spend alone.

Start a journal

Journaling is a great way to organize your thoughts and keeps you from having emotions bottled up. There are many benefits to keeping a journal, but again, it can seem impossible to find time. Challenge yourself to write down a sentence a day. It can be whatever you want it to be. Having a journal allows your thoughts to be freely released and is good for mental health. It can be a relaxing solution and help keep you organized.

Reach out to an old friend

As we get older it seems impossible to keep up with old friends. Social media is a great way to stay connected but takes that human element away from relationships. It can be very easy to get consumed in our own lives. Share your life with others, not through social media. Meet up with an old friend for coffee, lunch, a drink, anything. Texting and calling has never been easier. So use your phone for what it was intended for and call a loved one you haven’t seen in a while.

Get our of your comfort zone

Finally, try getting out or your comfort zone. These previous challenges listed above tie into that. It is always a great idea to push yourself. Experiencing and learning something new will be better for you in the long run. It is a scary transition but ultimately challenging yourself this year will make it a great one.

As this season concludes be grateful for the new year and the abundance of blessings you’ve received. New Year’s resolutions can almost be considered cliché, which is why I chose to use the word “challenge.” You should always look to challenge yourself, and what better time to sit down and reflect than in a new year. Growth will meet you in 2018 and come 2019, you will be looking forward to new challenges and adventures.
