8 Travel Resolutions to Make this Year

By Brittany Loeffler on January 2, 2018

The hardest part of a New Year’s resolution is knowing what steps need to be taken in order to achieve it. One of the most common resolutions is to travel, but what does it take to actually get to a new destination? If one of your resolutions is to travel somewhere new, you will need to make separate travel resolutions to keep so that you make it to your desired destination.

Whether you are an experienced traveler or are planning on taking your first trip, you should make some travel resolutions to make the most out of your adventures!

Start Pinching Pennies

It’s easy to say yes to going out to dinner with your friends a couple nights a week and dropping $20 on a meal that isn’t necessarily amazing or healthy. If you are planning to take a trip this year, start saying no when you’re invited out to dinner or drinks and find something that is less expensive to do instead.

Traveling can be expensive, so it’s important to cut costs that you don’t necessarily need and save that money for your plane ticket or lodging. Buying that Starbucks Frappe is temporary happiness, traveling and experiencing a new culture is happiness that will last you a lifetime.

Do Your Research

It’s common knowledge that college students don’t have a lot of money to play around with, but that doesn’t have to keep you from traveling. Start doing your research early on affordable destinations, the best months to travel to a certain destination, and tourist attractions.

Browse online to see when you can get the cheapest plane tickets and which neighborhood is the most affordable to stay. What tourist attractions should you book in advance and which should you buy in the country? Make sure you are getting your money’s worth!

Learn a New Language

Not knowing anything about the native language where you are traveling will make you feel very vulnerable and sometimes helpless. If you have a place in mind, start learning the basics of the language they speak there.

A great language to learn is Spanish because it is the native language of a large number of countries in the world. It’s also a useful language to know while living in America! You don’t have to become fluent or conversational in the language before you travel, but it’s helpful to know the basics.

Get Out of the Country

America is a huge country filled with a variety of culture and landscapes. You can travel to the mountains, the beach, the desert, the possibilities are endless! However, it’s important to travel around the world and to other countries to gain some perspective on life and different cultures. Sometimes, it is less expensive to travel abroad than it is in your own country. America is big, but the world is bigger.

Take Part in Another Culture

The beauty of traveling is learning and taking part in another culture. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new and foreign to you. If there is a festival or celebration happening when you are traveling, get involved and listen to the music, learn a traditional dance, or eat a native dish.

Make Travel Friends

One of the best parts about traveling is making friends with people from around the world. This may be other travelers or native residents of the country you have traveled to. You will hear impeccable stories and experiences that you never dreamed of from your new friends.

Stay in hostels rather than private hotel rooms or AirBnBs so you have a chance to get to know people who are also willing to make friends.

Cross Something Off Your List

We all have a list of all the destinations we would like to go and sites we would like to see. Why not make one of your travel resolutions to go to one and cross it off your list? It may be one of the World’s Seven Wonders or a city you read about online. Make it a point to get there and start the process of crossing off destinations on your list.

Travel Solo

This is a scary thought to some. Whether you are afraid of being alone for a long period of time or getting lost, there is always some type of fear about traveling solo. The best way to get over these fears is to just do it. When you travel by yourself it gives you the opportunity to learn and get to know yourself. At such a crucial time in your life, it’s important to know what kind of person you are.

Traveling solo is a way to grow as a person and impress yourself at what you can do on your own. When you come home, you may be a completely different person from when you left!
