Super Mario Odyssey

The biggest highlight of gaming has come here over a month ago and is on everyone’s wish list for the holidays! The big wait for this game has happened for at least four months since the video game developers had advertised it, and now it is finally over. Fans are eager to get this game as soon as possible. It is Super Mario Odyssey.

Super Mario Odyssey is the highlight for the Nintendo Switch. It is basically a game where it is open-ended, a universe where Mario can explore different aspects of different worlds rather than focus on specific missions, with the help of his new ally and friend, Cappy. Cappy is a hat-shaped ghost that allows Mario to reach objects that are out of his reach, and most importantly, allows him to take control of certain enemies to get across stages, also known as “capture”. “Capture” means when Cappy lands on a certain enemy or object, Mario then goes inside the body of that enemy and his mind then controls that enemy. In my opinion, this is very similar to the soul functioning the body of a person, where the body is dependent on the soul; the nature of the soul determines the nature of that person. In the game, since Mario is the hero trying to rescue Princess Peach (again!), he uses enemies for his own good. He starts his adventure in the Cap Kingdom, rather than the Mushroom Kingdom, because there is where he meets Cappy. The main storyline is that Mario is trying to stop the marriage of Princess Peach to Bowser. Yes, everyone knows in the past Bowser has kidnapped Peach several times and Mario goes to rescue her, but if you look closely, you can observe that Bowser is head-over-heels with the princess. We actually see Bowser and his wedding ceremony towards the end of the game. After players complete the storyline of the game, they are allowed to travel to the Mushroom Kingdom.

There are new changes we see as players make progress during the game. Along the way, the duo reach Mayor Pauline in New Donk City. This is the first time we see Pauline being used in the main storyline with Bowser; previously when we saw Pauline, she is carried away by a misbehaving Donkey Kong. Now, she is your average woman wandering the streets of the city. New Donk City takes us back to Mario’s humble beginnings. The New Donkers cheer, “Jump, man!”, a reference to Mario’s original name when he first appeared in the game Donkey Kong. Pauline also stars as the lead singer and has her own hit single, Jump Up, Super Star!, which fans can purchase in iTunes; this is the first time Nintendo has successfully released content onto iTunes. I have heard that Nintendo has released other non gaming content as well–two movies, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Super Mario Bros.–that were not very good. Pauline’s song is a big-band jazz style, very similar to society in New York City where we continue to hear jazz music today. Nintendo should reach out to iTunes more often in the future.

Super Mario Odyssey is THE game to experience. Earlier during the semester a request is made for getting the game so that Mville students can play even those who don’t own the Nintendo Switch. It is a game fun for all ages and for one or more players to experience. They would know what it is like to explore different areas of the real world because many kingdoms in the game are based on locations found in the real world. For example, New Donk City is based off New York, NY and the Moon Kingdom is based off the Moon. The Odyssey is a special ship that is shaped like a hat that travels to these kingdoms like an airplane. The most common feature people will get to see is enemies and people wearing hats. Hats are going to appear in homage to Cappy and his new abilities. The game is a new Mario adventure people have been waiting to try out.
