THE LEAD: WINS FOR DEMOCRATS, EQUALITY IN 2017 ELECTIONS
New governors have been elected for both Virginia and New Jersey. While only a few states had elections yesterday, the results have deeply impacted where the Democratic and Republican parties currently stand in US politics, and issued an early indicator of how voters feel about President Trump.
The Washington Post reports, “Election Day 2017 is just about in the books, with Democrats Phil Murphy and Ralph Northam winning the governor’s mansions in New Jersey and Virginia, respectively. The latter won the biggest and most closely watched race of the night, giving Democrats a shot in the arm after a tough electoral year. And plenty of signs Tuesday pointed to a very good night for Democrats.”
The Post adds that the winners of the night are Democrats’ morale, the transgender community — in Virginia, Danica Roem will be the first openly transgender candidate to be elected and serve in a state legislative body – overcoming tragedy and Democrats’ redistricting hopes, while the losers are Trump-style Nationalism, Gillespie and GOP candidates who don’t bear-hug Trump, Steve Bannon and Chris Christie.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL GETS MORE BAD NEWS – 3 PLAYERS ARRESTED FOR SHOPLIFTING IN CHINA
With a reputation already damaged by a coaching and recruiting scandal, there is more bad news for college basketball, as three players — including high-profile UCLA star LiAngelo Ball, brother of L.A. Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball — were arrested for shoplifting.
The Huff Post picks up the story: “The UCLA basketball team came to China as hoops ambassadors, but now some of the players may have been swept up in an international incident.
Chinese authorities arrested three UCLA team members, including celebrated freshman LiAngelo Ball, on charges of shoplifting on Tuesday in Hangzhou, according to ESPN. They were released on bail Wednesday, the sports network said, citing an unnamed source.
Freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill also were reportedly charged in the incident at a Louis Vuitton store next to the team hotel.”
Sigh.
