Moving into a new apartment can be a real drag when you feel like you have to refurnish it entirely. Furnishing an apartment can be not only costly but also make move-in day far more hectic than you’re prepared for, especially if you’re already stressed about last-minute, back-to-school tasks you need to complete.

Lucky for you, one way to avoid all the hassle is to simply rent your furniture. That being said, there are still a lot of questions surrounding this choice, and it’s not always the right one. For that reason, here’s how you know whether or not renting your furniture is right for you.

1. It’s your best option

Renting your furniture is one of those things that could be a last resort. For example, you could ask family or friends if they have used furniture they’re looking to get rid of, you could scour mobile apps in which people sell items inexpensively (i.e. LetGo), and you could ensure that your apartment doesn’t have the items that you’re looking to rent.

Basically, if your only option is to rent your furniture, then you should probably look into it a little further.

2. It’ll save you money

While this isn’t always the case, sometimes renting furniture can save you a lot of money. For example, some items would cost you hundreds of dollars to purchase from a store but would cost you even less to rent for the school year.

So weigh the prices accordingly — how much money would it cost to buy a couch for the school year? How much money would it cost to rent a couch for the school year? If you aren’t saving much, it’s not worth it. But if you are saving quite a bit, then I would definitely rent.

3. You’re neat/organized

This seems obvious, but this is a true test in knowing yourself. Are you a messy person? Do you spill things often? Would you have a hard time keeping furniture clean? Do you have messy friends?

When you’re renting items, you always have to keep damages in mind. It’s going to cost you money if you damage the furniture you’re renting, so prepare for these “unexpected” costs as well. If you have to pay fines or buy the furniture outright, you may not actually be saving money. So consider that!

4. You need everything

If you just need a single furniture item, it would probably make more sense to simply purchase it. That being said, if you have to furnish an entire apartment, you’re likely going to save hundreds of dollars by renting your furniture for the year.

So take a look at the apartment, determine what you’re going to need and, based on that, make a decision as to which option is going to save you the most time and money in the long run. The best thing you can do in this situation is to research your options, so put in a little extra time and figure out what your best option is!

5. You don’t have a means of moving furniture

Maybe finances aren’t an issue, but moving furniture is. Some furniture rental locations will actually deliver your furniture for you (and pick it up at the end of the year) so this might be a good option for you. That being said, this is not always an option, so this is another situation in which you will want to do your research ahead of time.

Maybe you can’t rent out a truck for the day, or you can’t move furniture on your own. In those cases, rentals might just be your best option.

6. You have short-term needs

Many students will buy furniture for themselves during college, and they’ll use this furniture well into adulthood. If that’s you, then renting probably isn’t the best idea. However, if you know you’re moving back home after school and you’ll have no further need for furniture in the near future, renting might not be a bad idea.

While this does feel like it’s looking a little too far ahead, you want to make sure that you’re considering your future goals and being careful in your decisions, as you may not need the furniture now, but if you do in the future, you’ll save a lot of money by reusing your college furniture.

Furniture rentals can be costly, but so can furnishing a place on your own. In fact, there are many concerns that you should be keeping in mind when deciding whether or not to rent furniture. Again, if you’re not sure whether or not these rentals are right for you, keep these six ideas in mind and really consider it before you commit.

While it can save you time and money in the long run, this is not always the case. So definitely evaluate your situation prior to making a decision.

Good luck!
