Showtime: They Know How to Capture an Audience

By Victoria Hernandez on December 14, 2011

For those of you who aren’t already hooked, Dexter is a drama on Showtime that is finishing its sixth season. And as a child of the 90′s, before this man, I knew another Dexter. That would be the one from Dexter’s Laboratory. You know, the one with the annoying sister, Dee Dee? Yeah that cartoon was awesome.

Anyway, when the show stopped showing up on the TV guide for cartoon network I was saddened. And this summer joy filled my heart. My friend told me to watch Dexter. He’s a lab geek for Miami Metro who is a serial killer, killer. He ends the lives of serial killers. It’s addicting to say the least. As I was telling another friend of mine how I wanted to start watching it, she mentioned that she had the first season on DVD. My hero (I’m too poor for Netflix). So in about a span of 4 days I had finished the first season, 12, hour-long episodes. I was hooked.

Being the cheap person I am, I signed up for a free trial of Netflix knowing that after 29 days I would end the subscription just to watch the show. About 2 1/2 weeks later I was caught up. I should probably mention I was working and taking a class at the same time. Every free hour I had was spent watching Dexter.

My brother got wind of my addiction and mentioned a show called Weeds, saying that if I liked Dexter, I would like this show as well. Let it be known I finished all six seasons in about 1 week. And then I was able to catch the 7th season as it came out on Showtime. Oh, not everyone watches this show. Weeds is about a woman who’s husband died, so she sells marijuana in order for her family to keep its extravagant lifestyle. Well, it starts out as simply put.

Now during this past semester my friends and I have been watching Dexter each Sunday night, and we’ve noticed the previews for two other shows that will begin next year. The first one is House of Lies. It’s brand new. Essentially this group of managing consultants are making high roller businesses look like fools, taking their money for their own personal pleasure without them even realizing it.

Next up, it’s had one season, but I shall catch up on it in no time and be prepared for season 2. Shameless. My favorite part is that William H. Macy is in it. I loved him in Wild Hogs. But in the show he is an alcoholic with six kids. That alone sounds like a winner, but maybe Showtime just has a knack for going with shows that people want to watch. They’re like reality shows, but more realistic.
