By Uloop Writer on December 12, 2011

Brittany Mattfeld is a senior at Florida State University majoring in Psychology. She consistently strives to better her community involving campus involvement, student outreach and philanthropic efforts.

Brittany

Brittany is currently the Internal Vice Chair for the Relay For Life Executive Board and previously served as its Mission Education and Advocacy Co-Chair while simultaneously serving as the Vice President of External Affairs for her sorority, taking 15 hours of academic courses and working no less than 10 hours a week. In short, Brittany Mattfeld is super woman. Brittany plans to graduate in the spring and attend the graduate school of her choice in pursuit of a Masters degree in Public Administration. And, I am privileged enough to be her roommate.

Q: What are you your biggest accomplishments in college?

A: I think that one of them is figuring out what I want to do with my life and taking the time to explore other options and shadow people and intern places to get a feel for different career paths. My involvement in my sorority has been an accomplishment also because it has forced me to put myself out there and meet other people and improve my communication. Plus, I have made friends that are similar minded, but also challenge me.

Q: What sparked your passion for service and philanthropy?

A: I think that all of my life and through high school, those things have been huge parts of it. I don’t think I can do anything with my life that doesn’t involve helping others.

Q: How do you manage your challenging schedule?

A: Making to-do lists and being able to say “no,” to things that I know I cannot fully commit to.

Q: How have your collegiate experiences molded your goals for the future?

A: My involvement in Relay for Life has a lot to do with what I want to do with my life.

Q: Why?

A: I like planning and developing things and going above and beyond, not just what’s expected, but thinking of new ways to benefit others.

Q: What has been your favorite college memory?

A: Going to New Orleans for Mardi Gras my freshman year. My friends and I decided on a whim to road trip to see New Orleans with people that I didn’t know very well… who are now my roommates. College has taught that a schedule is necessary but so is spontaneity.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

A: I don’t know if this is the best advice, you can decide, but my Aunt has always said, “Don’t get married until your 26.” Not like age 26 is some magic age but it makes me think that now I’m still learning about myself and realizing what I need and it makes me more open minded because I am thinking I have time for myself.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you could give to a current or incoming college student?

A: Don’t be afraid to put yourself in situations that might challenge you, or ever underestimate what you can do. Most people can do anything they believe themselves to be able to do. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will.
