Before moving in with a new roommate, it is a good idea to fill out a college roommate questionnaire. This will help you get to know your roommate better, and it will help her get to know you.

The results of this questionnaire will give you a glimpse into your roommate’s personality and what your life together might be like. It’ll also help you decide if you two are a good fit to live together. I’ve created a two-section roommate questionnaire that I hope will help you find a good roommate.

The Basics

This section is about getting to know your roommate. You might find that you have some things in common, and it will be a great way to start a conversation.

•Hometown?

•Major? Why did you choose this major?

•Relationship status? (If they are in a relationship, they might want time alone in the room to video chat with their significant other, or their significant other might stay overnight.)

•Hobbies?

•Favorite TV shows?

•Favorite movies?

•Favorite actor and actress?

•Favorite musical artists?

•Any allergies or other health conditions that I should be aware of? (This is important because you wouldn’t want to bring peanut butter if your roommate is badly allergic to peanuts!)

Room Logistics

This section will reveal what life in the room might be like. Based on these answers, you can make arrangements that’ll be beneficial for the both of you. (For example, if you indicate that you are an early bird and your roommate is a night owl, your roommate can make arrangements to hold those late night study sessions in the library rather than in the room.)

•Are you an early bird or a night owl?

•Do you plan on spending a lot of time in the room, or do you plan to be out and about?

•What time should the room be quiet?

•Can certain lights be on while the other roommate is sleeping?

•Can the TV be on or can music be playing while the other roommate is sleeping?

•How far in advance should the other roommate be notified of overnight guests? How long can overnight guests stay over?

•What about overnight guests of the opposite sex?

•What items are you guys sharing? (This could be anything from food to clothes to hairdryers.)

•What items are you definitely NOT sharing? (We all have items that we’re a little overprotective of, and that’s okay! (For me, it’s my shoes.) Just be sure to kindly let your roommate know that you don’t want her to touch that particular item.)

•How clean do you plan to keep the room? How often will you guys clean? Who has what cleaning responsibilities (For example, who takes out the trash? Who does the dishes?)?

•How hot or cold will you keep the room?

•Will you keep the door open or closed? Locked or unlocked?

•Can you kick each other out of the room if a significant other comes over?

•Will smoking and drinking be allowed in the room?

Remember: you will be living with your roommate for an entire year. Choosing a roommate is not a decision you should take lightly. For that reason, you should read potential roommates’ responses to a roommate questionnaire to help you make a more informed decision.
