There is no better feeling than coming home after a long day at school or work and just relaxing in your home. Creating a space that is specific to you and how you like to unwind is an important part of decorating your apartment or home.

Creating a comfortable space in your home is not only a good way to physically express yourself but it also serves the very important job of helping you relax. Everyone’s rejuvenating space is going to look different because everyone has different styles and needs. One person might favor rooms with more open space and less decoration, while another might find being surrounded by a lot of their belongings to be more comforting.

Creating a space that helps you unwind is a really personal process, so it is impossible to create an all-encompassing guide for it. That being said, check out these tips to help give you some ideas about what your quiet space could look like:

1. Style

As said before, the style of your furniture has a lot to do with how relaxing your space feels and it’s very specific to what your style is. Minimal furniture often can evoke a sense of space and quiet where noisier furniture is, well, noisier. If clutter bothers you, going minimalistic is probably good for you. On the flip side, a lot of people find comfort and safety in being surrounded by their things. For these people, a messier design could work in their favor.

By going too far modern or too far cluttered, you run the risk of creating the opposite of a relaxing space. Going too minimalistic can make the space feel cold and hard. Lots of hard edges create a feeling of harshness in the space that isn’t good for relaxation.

Creating a space that is too cluttered can lead to stress and feeling claustrophobic. It’s important to find a healthy balance between soft and minimalistic. Depending on your preferences, the style can lean one way or the other, but make sure to stay in the middle ground to avoid creating an unwelcoming space.

2. Finding your spot

Finding where you unwind best is an important part of moving into a new living space. Most people have a favorite spot in their house, whether it’s their bed, the living room, or the porch. Finding what that spot is for you and making it completely your own is the best way to create a quiet spot in your home. Once you find that spot, capitalize on it! Transform it into something that caters specifically to you and your relaxation needs.

Find a nook or even just a chair and surround it with things that will make it even more enjoyable to unwind at the end of the day. Put a small speaker in your nook or bring your video game console into the room where your special chair is. Simple things like this can make the difference when you are tired and just want to be alone and do your thing.

3. Colors

Colors are an important part of transforming your space. You want to adorn your home with soothing colors that will aid in relaxing rather than colors that make it feel crowded and nosiy. White or cream colors are especially relaxing colors and fit into any design style. They also match great with almost any other color that your furniture might be.

Feel free to use color to your advantage as well — paint your apartment your favorite color even if it seems outrageous. If it makes you happy and comfortable, who cares about if it would make an interior designer cry. Your space is your space, and you should do with it what makes it most inviting to you.

Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, it’s so important to make your home your own. The last thing we need in a society that seems to rely on stress is to let our homes follow that same pattern. Home is where you should feel safe and comfortable, not where you should feel stressed and overwhelmed.

How you decorate your home plays a key part in whether your home feels like home or like the place you live. If a certain decorative style makes you feel most happy, then go for it! Fill your house with modern or Mediterranean furniture. If making your space look crazy funky makes you most comfortable, don’t hold back! Fill your house with crazy colors and fun walls.

At the end of the day, your home is yours to create and you should do whatever you need to to make it feel that way.
