UCF Tuition Hiked by 15%.

By Brittany Tai on July 12, 2012

This past May, the 15% undergraduate student tuition increase for the 2012-2013 school year was approved by the UCF Board of Trustees. After the motion passed, SGA President Cortez Whatley announced the reason for the increase as well as his reasoning behind his desire to pass it in his online address on the UCF SGA website.

With the increase, each credit hour has been raised from $128.28 to $147.52. Therefore, undergrads will be looking to pay about $577 more than what they’ve paid before for a typical school year.

Universities throughout the state  have suffered funding cuts, which led to the passed motion. Without the increase, UCF wouldn’t be able to have the resources and opportunities available to its students. UCF would lose some of its unique programs, as well as quality professors. In general, Whatley felt the overall quality of UCF’s education program would have suffered and without it the “UCF experience would have been altered,” he said.  With this increase, the university can make up for the one-time $52.6 million  budget cut, along with the $100 million permanent cut.

This issue has been one that’s affecting the whole state of Florida and many universities are going through the same thing UCF is experiencing.

The increase is to become effective for this upcoming school year. However, for graduate students tuition will only be hiked by 4%.

It’s no secret that many undergraduate students are a little taken aback or, for lack of a better word, upset with this change. The costs of housing, books, and other college related aspects aren’t cheap and this increase may put a further burden on students and their parents. For those without loans or scholarships, are in a dilemma as they try to figure out how they’re going to pay for a quality education.

Nevertheless, UCF is currently taking strides on receiving better funding for education.
