How Color Affects Your Mood

By Alyssa Laffitte on September 21, 2017

One part of being a college student is decorating your room. College life can be stressful, so more students are becoming interested in colorology/color psychology. In this article, we’ll discuss theories of colorology, such as how does color affect your mood? And based on that information, what color should you paint your room?

White

White is a very clean, crisp color. It symbolizes purity and goodness and encourages order and organization. However, dirt is more visible on white, so if you decide to paint your room white, you will have to keep it extra clean.

Blue

The color blue is known as a peaceful and relaxing color. It is said that looking at blue tones can lower pulse rate and body temperature and that people are generally more productive in blue rooms. So if you want a study space that’s conducive to relaxation and to productivity, look into painting your room blue!

Green

People associate the color green with nature, life, and vibrancy since most of nature is green. Green is said to improve vision, reading ability, and comprehension. It’s great for an atmosphere conducive to razor sharp focus. If you want your space to inspire you to focus, green is the color for you!

Yellow

Yellow is one of the happiest, most cheerful colors. It is thought to improve metabolism. However, yellow can be harsh on the eyes due to the large amount of light it reflects, so if you want to paint your room yellow, go for a softer yellow.

Red

In general, the color red has the opposite effects of the color blue. While blue is calming, red is stimulating. Red increases heart rate and breathing rate. I would not recommend painting your room red, especially if you’re a stressed-out college student (unless it’s for a small accent wall or section).

Now that you know a little bit more about colors and how they affect your mood, you can choose a suitable color to paint your room.
