7 Ways to Spend Your Day Off in Your Apartment

By Kailey Walters on September 6, 2017

We all have those days when we just want to stay in and not have to deal with the rest of the world. As an introvert, I completely understand how that feels on a pretty regular basis. Especially when a rare day off comes along, I jump at the chance to spend some time in my own personal space without unnecessary interruptions.

Even if you’re not like me (and you’re cringing at the idea of spending so much alone time), you can still find ways to enjoy a day in your apartment — whether on your own or with friends on a nice quiet night in.

1. Do a self-care day

It’s your day off. Although you may still have other responsibilities to attend to once this day is over, you also deserve to treat yourself. How you do a self-care day is up to you; do whatever makes you happy and helps you to relax. For some of you, that could mean pampering yourself with a spa day. Paint your nails, take a bubble bath … whatever feels therapeutic and right to you.

For other people, a self-care day might mean something completely different such as playing video games for hours straight, listening to your favorite music, or even just taking a long nap to recharge your batteries. Whatever it is, make sure to keep in mind that this day is for yourself.

2. Watch a movie — or several

As someone who doesn’t watch movies that often, I always feel as if I’m trying to catch up on all the movies out there I have yet to see. If you feel the same way, or if there are some movies you’ve been dying to catch lately, clear some space in your day, grab a snack of your choice, and curl up on the couch. Prepare to stay there for a while as you immerse yourself in the lives of the characters. You may emerge bleary-eyed and blinking, but the experience will be worth it.

3. Take time for your hobbies

Engage in that hobby you’ve been meaning to do for a while but just never had the time for.

You know what I’m talking about. There’s always that one thing (or maybe it’s many things) you love to do, but you rarely are able to devote enough time to it. This could include any range of things you’re passionate about, from painting to playing the violin to teaching yourself a new and valuable skill (e.g. the basics of computer programming).

Personally, I love to read but often find myself short on time to do so. On my day off, I would love to choose a book from the towering stack on my desk, crack it open for the first time, and spend at least several hours lost in its pages.

You’ll certainly reap the rewards if you’re productive with your time. It will be not only enjoyable in the moment but also make you feel that you’ve accomplished something.

4. Cook food

While you’re stuck inside your apartment, you might as well find ways to nourish yourself in a fun way. Pull up some recipes you’ve been dying to try out and break out the pots and pans. It’s a fresh way to keep yourself entertained, as you can experiment with whatever ingredients you already have in your kitchen. Plus, you’re being productive and time-efficient because you can make enough food to last you for the next few days or even the rest of the week.

5. Invite some friends over for a relaxing day in

If you’re not a huge fan of spending so much time on your own, invite some friends over for a relaxing day in.

You can choose to get takeout, hang out and watch Netflix all day, chat for hours on end … whatever you and your best buds love to do together, do it. You probably both deserve some down time and what better way to spend it than relaxing with each other?

6. Play cards or board games

Again, if you prefer to spend your day off in good company, playing cards or board games is a great way to go. It may not be for everyone, but if you and your pals are fast learners and enjoy a little friendly competition, playing can keep you entertained for hours. It can even be a good bonding experience if you play games that involve partners or teams.

7. Sleep

Seriously, though. We are all humans, we all lead busy lives, and at the end of the day we are unmistakably, unapologetically tired AF. I’m not suggesting you sleep the whole day away, but if you feel so inclined, take a nap at some point or allow yourself to sleep in a little in the morning. As long as you don’t overdo it, your body will thank you.
