4 Ways to Avoid Homesickness as a College Freshman

By Kristen Van Buren on September 8, 2017

Being a college freshman can be a little bit scary at times when you are still getting used to taking college courses, adjusting to a new environment, and trying to make new friends. I remember when I was nervous during my first couple of months of college because I was still unsure about what I wanted to major in at that time and I was still trying to find a good group of friends to hang out with.

Here are four ways to avoid homesickness as a college freshman.

1. Get involved in clubs/activities/sports

Getting involved in clubs/activities/sports was how I got out of my comfort zone and made new friends. Some colleges and universities have many different clubs/activities/sports to choose from and there might be a club/activity/sport that you are very interested in or that is your hobby.

2. Go to college events

My school was lucky enough to have a club called the Campus Activities Team that is a student group that plans awesome activities each semester. It is a great way to meet new people, see something that you enjoy, and take a break if you had a long day of studying or working on homework. Some events that I have been to at my college were movie nights, arcade nights, and concerts.

3. Explore your college campus

Roaming around my campus when I didn’t have plans or classes was my favorite thing to do when I was in college. High Point University has beautiful scenery that helped me clear my mind when I was walking around the campus. I always needed to clear my mind when I was studying in the library for midterms and finals for four hours or more.

4. Make new friends

Making new friends in a new environment isn’t easy. Getting involved in clubs/activities/sports and going to college events was how I made friends during my first year of college and how I avoided homesickness. I met my first close college friend when I was at Starbucks getting a Frappuccino. Thirty minutes later, I ran into him at a club meeting and I have now been friends with him for five years now.

Following all of these ways will help you avoid homesickness. Homesickness can be horrible at times but going out and trying new things will help you get over homesickness. Being in college is a fun experience that should be enjoyed without dealing with homesickness.
