I will be the very first one to admit that I almost never sacrifice comfort for cuteness. Some people do, and if you’re one of them, more power to you. I kind of admire you. But personally, if there is a shoe I absolutely love but find that it is absolutely too hard on my feet when I try it on in the shoe store, I don’t dare buy it.

When I do have to sacrifice a little comfort for cuteness, er, professionalism, I wear the professional ones, and as soon as the event or work day is over, I switch them out with shoes I packed in my bag. I learned the lesson a long time ago that wearing uncomfortable shoes is harsh on your feet and leaves you with pains you just don’t want.

Since walking around my school’s huge campus for the start of the new school year, I’ve come to appreciate comfortable shoes. And honestly, there is no need to sacrifice comfort for cuteness. You can have both. There is a host of shoes that are both comfortable and cute; you just have to be patient to find the ones that are right for you.

If you just started school or are preparing for school to begin in the next two weeks and need some ideas about the types of shoes to bring with you to campus this fall, here are a few that you may want to put on your shopping list.

A good white pair of tennis shoes goes with almost anything you have in your closet. Sneakers aren’t just for athletes. It used to be that we could tell someone was a student athlete just by their sneakers. But even if you’re not an athlete, these shoes are perfect for traversing around campus throughout the fall.

Similar to white ones, black sneakers are super chic. There are many name brands to choose from but Converse looks to be back in session. I have both a good white pair and a black pair of sneakers and when I’m in conflict about what shoes to wear, I simply pull out one of these.

The freshman 15 is indeed a thing you want to avoid in college. A solid, durable pair of running shoes will help you stay fit and when you stay fit, you will stay focused. Running shoes are super important to college success.

Fall is in and so are the boots. If you are going to a school up north or to a school that is just located in an environment that is prone to snow and super cold weather, then boots may be your best bet. Boots that are waterproof, warm, and comfortable in which you can still feel your feet are perfect to have in this type of weather. If perhaps you go to class in a much warmer environment, then something that is looser but still substantial may work just as well for cooler months.

College campuses can be pretty germy, especially dorm rooms, hallways, and bathrooms that are in most cases shared inside a room or shared inside a hall. I would suggest, especially if you have sensitive skin, to wear flip-flops into and out of the shower as well as when you’re just walking from one dorm room to the next or down the hall to the vending machine.

Target or Walmart is the best place to buy these. When I moved in with roommates and found out we’d be sharing a bathroom, I immediately when to Target and bought a cheap pair of flip-flops for the shower, bathroom, and practically, the whole house.

You know these types of shoes, the one pair that is only worn with the little black dress or with a suit and tie for that career fair interview. Whether you’re into dressing up or prefer to be more casual at all times, bring something that you can wear to a more formal occasion. Sneakers can look classy but they’re not exactly what you’d want to wear to interview for an internship, to go out on a date, or to attend a gala dinner or party for the school’s elite.

I used to never be that into flats just because on the outside they look as if they could fall apart or attract holes in the soles at any time, but in the past few months, I’ve come to love flats. If you want to look professional but still feel comfortable, a pair of flats will do the trick. College campus interviewers likely won’t be impressed if you show up in a pair of Converse. With new opportunities all around you, a solid pair of business flats in a neutral color will allow any girl to look great and feel comfortable.

We all have certain things we worry about, but your shoes shouldn’t have to be one of them.
