When you have been living in your apartment for some time, sometimes you can get the feeling that the place is a little stale. Your apartment is your home, but that does not always mean that it feels that way.

So, to change up your apartment a bit to make it a bit more inviting and to give it that personal touch, here are six tips to give your living area a breath of fresh air.

1. Purchase plants

Sometimes, in an apartment, this is not doable, especially if there is not an area in which you can place the plant so that it gets sunlight. However, in those cases, succulents or even artificial plants can be good alternatives. The benefits of having plants in the apartment are even more than for health reasons, but they also provide a more full feeling to the apartment.

While it is scientifically proven that having plants in the house helps in terms of health, even artificial items can provide a fresh feeling to an otherwise stale apartment.

2. Use a humidifier

To literally give yourself a breath of fresh air, make sure that you use a humidifier in your apartment. This helps to make sure that the air in the apartment is not too dry and that you are breathing in a fresh breath every time.

There are plenty of options to this end as well; some of them more affordable than others, so take a look at the different humidifiers available and make a decision based on your budget and preferences. You can also look into air purifiers if that is the route you would like to go.

3. Give it a fresh coat of paint

Sometimes, all your apartment needs is a fresh coat of paint in a new color to breathe new life into it. Again, sometimes this is not doable, as some complexes will not allow you to paint the walls, but if this is doable, definitely take advantage of that fact.

I would recommend choosing from calming colors, although there is always the option to paint your room something vibrant and bright, depending on what you need to feel more at home. Plus, this is a great opportunity for some roommate bonding! Just be sure to check with your landlord to ensure this is doable. (Also keep in mind, you will usually have to paint the apartment back to how it was when you moved in, so be sure that you are prepared to do that as well if that is the case).

4. Feng Shui

Again, sometimes the smallest change can make the biggest difference when it comes to your apartment. In fact, simply rearranging your furniture can change everything in terms of the flow of your apartment. So you can go by the book on this one, or simply move the furniture in a way that is more fitting to the environment.

Either way you choose to go, making these small changes in your apartment will be beneficial in terms of giving it that fresh breath of air that you need.

5. Use fragrances

Some apartments will not allow incense or candles, but there are other alternatives as well in terms of bringing in fresh smells to your rooms. Wallflowers and other plug-ins are good options, though they can get a bit pricy. In addition, there are wax melts that emit aromas through entire rooms.

Again, there are plenty of options here, so you have to take a look at the items that make the most sense for you, but definitely read through and take a look at the options. Just because candles are not allowed in your apartment does not mean that you cannot use any incense at all.

6. Hang up paintings

Many college students turn to posters and pictures of friends and family to hang around the apartment, but if you have any open wall space, you can certainly hang up some paintings in those areas to bring in a bit more life.

You can go the floral route, paint something of your own, or purchase any other piece of art that speaks to you. Again, there are countless pieces out there, so do some shopping around, and when you find a piece that fits your budget and your needs, purchase it and hang it up.  The possibilities here are endless!

You may not be missing anything in terms of functionality, or even in terms of decoration, but sometimes, your apartment simply needs an extra little touch to give it a breath of fresh air.

Just because you’ve been living in a place for the school year doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t feel like home. So follow these tips and before long you’ll be feeling right at home!
