Part of a Guide to Being a Broke Millennial

By Zanié Nibblins on August 10, 2017

Find yourself spending loads of money on things you think you shouldn’t have to? We’ve all been there. Many of us are still there.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Why are we spending a gazillion dollars to eat? Why does really decent shampoo cost an arm and a leg? Simple: We’re lazy. Laziness can be both a good thing and a bad thing but in this specific case, it’s more of a bad thing.

Here’s part of a guide to being a broke millennial.

1. FIRST of all. There’s no reason someone at least 18 or so wouldn’t know how to cook. If you don’t know how to, you’re LAZY! You don’t feel like learning. You’ve gotten so comfortable with someone else making your food all the time. That’s okay (not really) but you should probably learn especially if you want to know what’s going into your body, my friend.

I’ve heard too many people complain about being broke but they have never gone grocery shopping a day in their lives. How does that add up? Exactly. Pick up a cookbook and make that pizza.

2. That $30 shampoo works wonders. Trust me. I know. I have some interesting locks going on with my pretty little head. But it’s not just shampoo we’re using. We’re using conditioner too sometimes. If you got a lot going on, you’ve probably added about 30 hair products to your collection. I don’t know about other people (especially women) but I’ve spent around $550 on hair products annually. Yikes.

Not just that, but I was spending a bunch on products that weren’t even doing what I wanted them to do for my hair. Doing a little bit (or a lot) of research on my specific hair type helped me cut down. Since I have curly hair, I did some of my research on Naturallycurly. They cover most hair types. From there, I make miraculous concoctions out of mostly essential oils.

3. Books might be expensive … did I say might be? I mean THEY ARE. If you need to do some research or maybe you feel like indulging in a great book, there’s this thing called the library. If you’re a student, you either get a discount or check those books out for free. Libraries are underrated. If you’re lucky you could find your whole semester’s worth. Smart, huh?

4. Are you artsy fartsy in any way? Grab your friends and have some arts and crafts parties! Make it a weekly thing! If you don’t like your friends that much, never mind! Make it a monthly thing then! You can DIY it up. Make some shirts.

I spent over $80 on a pair of ripped up (distressed) jeans. Why did I do that?! You might’ve done the same thing! Why did you do that?! You know what else exists? YOUTUBE! I could’ve spent maybe 10 minutes looking at someone rip up her $30 jeans with $5 tools. But instead I chose to spend that extra 45. Silly me.

This isn’t just jeans. Paint a picture instead of buying someone else’s art. Seriously. Pinterest exists. People on there will tell you how to make any kind of art from candles to bed frames. I’m so in love with that site it’s borderline pathetic.

5. Like to drink? Alcohol? You’ve got to be 21 though. I’m not your mom; do what you want. (This might either be my best or worst advice. You be the judge.)

But if you don’t know this already, you’ll know it now: PREGAME. Liquor is so much cheaper if you buy the bottles and mix those drinks up yourself and  THEN take a cab or whatever to your friend’s party. Plus, it makes you look super cool for having your own bar set. And who knows? If it’s your calling, you could be a bartender for your college career. I hear those people make good tips.

There you have it, friends. I hope this helped a little. Now go have yourself a bed frame-making party!
