How to Manage Your Time in College
College is a stressful season of life. You have to juggle school, friends, and work. Most students work part-time along with going to school full-time.
Let’s be honest: being an adult is not fun. There are times when you’ll have to sacrifice something fun in order to make responsibilities your priority (i.e. bills or grades). So how does one learn how to manage their time? Here are some tips to help if you find yourself struggling.
Make school a priority
Work and money may seem like the most important things to you right now, but doing well in school will help you in the long-run. Work can always wait. Make sure your work schedule doesn’t conflict with your school schedule. Don’t work a job that’s super demanding either.
You might have to wait tables for a couple of years, but they’re usually understanding when it comes to school. I found that taking my notes to work gave me some extra study time as well.
Plan ahead
Everyone hates syllabus day, but it’s really important to look over due dates. Write them in a planner. Some schools offer free planners that contain useful information. At the beginning of each week look over your due dates or test dates and plan accordingly.
Having multiple things due in one day can be difficult but it’s do-able. With this tip, you’ll be able to plan when you can go out with friends too, because who doesn’t need a few beers right?
Utilize your downtime
When you find yourself binge watching Netflix or stalking someone on Instagram do something productive instead. Yes, we all need time to relax and unwind from all of our stresses, but you can multitask as well.
You could always reward yourself with an episode or an allotted time for social media. I find this as the best method, and taking breaks in between studying has positive results.
Managing your time takes practice. I worked three jobs and went to school full-time, so it’s definitely possible (in that scenario I sacrificed sleep). Only you can determine what is most important to you and what you’re willing to sacrifice in order to manage everything in your life.
