A College Girl’s Newfound Obsession: Wish, the Shopping App

T-shirts for $1.00? Fairy lights for $3.00? Earrings for free? This is a college girl’s review of Wish, the shopping app I’ve found myself currently in love with.
It was a breezy evening after work when I first heard about the Wish app. I was walking back to my apartment building after getting off the bus and was on the phone with my little sister.
“It’s so cool,” she told me. “You have to check it out.”
She explained to me that Wish was a shopping app you could download to your phone and start shopping on right away. Just hearing the word “shopping” was enough to make me want to download the app right away, but then my sister told me how she ordered a shirt on there for $1.00. I was sold.
I couldn’t get that little light-blue icon on my phone’s homescreen fast enough. As soon as it was downloaded, I threw myself on my bed and started browsing.
Wish offers a little bit of everything on its app and you can find all of its items for crazy low prices. I swiped through the home page, which displayed the app’s more popular items, and couldn’t believe my eyes. They had drawstring bags with beautiful designs on them for less than five bucks, musical instruments for less than 20, pages and pages of clothes that were under 10, and so many other interesting items that I could have literally spent all day on the app.
I must have added at least 15 things to my wishlist that evening alone. Shopping is one of my biggest weaknesses and this app felt like it was going to be my Achilles’s heel. But I had work in the morning and chores to do, so I had to put my exploration of the app on hold for a little bit longer.
After work the next day, I boarded the bus to head home. With nothing else to do, I decided to pull out my phone and go look on Wish. I found a few things I was interested in buying while browsing the other night and ended up adding them to my shopping cart, with intent to buy later on. I was thinking about my decision to buy during work and had finally decided that I would go ahead and buy. My total was going to be less than $10 so I figured my bank account could take the hit.
I tapped on my shopping cart, so excited to finally complete my first Wish purchase when I saw it.
My total was almost $30.00!!!
Nope. No way. There had to be a problem. Something in my cart must have changed prices. I swiped through all of my items, trying to find the culprit.
That’s when I noticed how much it was going to cost to ship my items. Each seller was charging me anywhere from $1.00 to $3.00 to ship the item to them. This app isn’t like Amazon.com. There’s no combined shipping fulfilled by the company (that I’m aware of). You are charged for the shipping of each package. So, if you’re buying five items, each one costing $2.00, your item cost is $10.00. Then, tack on a $3.00 shipping charge for each of those items and you’re looking at $25.00.
This isn’t really a problem. It’s sort of to be expected, especially since you’re buying from individual sellers who have to be able to afford to ship the item to you. I guess my biggest problem was that I was lured by the super cheap prices and seeing my total nearly tripled was a big shock.
But once I got past the shipping costs (and the amount of time some items will take to arrive), I still found Wish to be a great app. You can find some awesome things on there that are difficult to find in-store or on other websites or can be found elsewhere but the item is sold at significantly higher prices.
It’s a lot of fun to browse through the app and the handy search function can help you narrow down its extensive list of items into what you’re looking for. For people who keep up with trends that are popular on social media websites such as Instagram, Wish sellers offer things like “magic bras” and those little fidget spinners for a low price. If you love fashion, you can easily find your style on this app. If you have something you like, it’s most likely on this app.

To conclude, I’m very happy with this latest obsession of mine. Will it become yours, too?
