Dear Incoming College Students,

College is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience. You’re going to be learning so much, meeting awesome people, and just having an overall wonderful time.

Sometimes though, when you’re having a good time, you may make decisions that you usually wouldn’t make under different circumstances. You might forget that you had a drink or two before you get behind the wheel. Dark streets may seem safe, just because you’re still on campus.

The truth is: anything can happen. While you should never live your life in fear or be too afraid to go anywhere, it’s important to remember to keep safe at all times, be prepared, and remain aware.

If you’re coming into college, or even if you’re currently attending, here are five tips that you should keep in mind as you enjoy your days as a student.

Tip 1: Don’t Walk Alone at Night

If you’re leaving a party or a night class or a club meeting, make sure you exit the building with another person or in a group of people. Stay in well-lit areas, avoiding tight alleyways or roads without streetlights, if possible. As soon as you make it into your car, lock the doors and then get on your way.

If things happen and you end up walking alone, whip out your cell and have someone on the phone with you. Let them know where you are and that you’ll call them as soon as you make it home or to your car. This way, you’ll have someone looking out for your return. Keep your earphones out so you’ll remain aware of your surroundings.

Tip 2: Be Safe With Alcohol

College life and drinking seem enmeshed with one another, but seriously — it’s just alcohol. It’s not manna from the heavens, no matter how much alcohol companies try to dress it up.

When you’re drinking, take it slow. Realize when you’ve had enough. If you don’t trust your own judgment, ask a friend to stop you if they think you’ve had enough while you’re out drinking. Most importantly, if you’ve had a drink, don’t risk driving. If you don’t have a ride, call for an Uber, Lyft, or taxi and get friends to chip in on the fare.

Tip 3: Check Out Your City’s Crime Map

There are certain neighborhoods in every large city that you should probably steer clear of, whether for a party or living there. Do a quick Google search for a crime map for your college’s city. It’s important to know, especially if you’re going to be living off campus.

Tip 4: Take a Self Defense Class

Why wait to learn to defend yourself? Even if you never have to use the skills you learn (and we’re hoping you don’t), wouldn’t you feel more at peace and pretty awesome knowing that you’ll be able to put up one heck of a fight should an attacker come at you?

You can also check and see what your college offers. Many colleges around the nation offer lessons that are completely free to attending students. For my fellow FSU students, Florida State University’s Police Department offers a free self-defense class that you can learn all about here.

Tip 5: Always Remain Aware & Prepared

No matter where you are, remain aware of your surroundings. As a fan of music, I know it’s hard not to walk around with your headphones on, but it’s safer to put the music away while you’re walking, especially if it’s at night. Carry pepper spray, a stun gun, or any other kind of self-defense item during outings.

I know some guys and girls feel a little silly or insecure carrying around things like this. If you’re uncomfortable, there are plenty of non-conspicuous self-defense items you can buy. I will note that no one should feel ashamed or nervous about being seen carrying around an item meant to provide protection should an attack happen. It’s a step towards taking your safety into your own hands and you have absolutely nothing to be ashamed about.

There are plenty of things that you can do to keep safe in college on top of the tips that I’ve listed here. Sit down with your parents/guardian/trusted advisor and ask them what you can do to remain safe while still having a great time when you start college. Remember: college is about taking chances, learning, and growing, but it never hurts to be prepared for anything to happen.

Keep safe and get excited for college in the fall!
