Do These 7 Things With Your Hometown Friends Before Leaving for Med School

By Amanda Olavarria on June 30, 2017

This article is brought to you by Kaplan, the leader in test prep for over 90 standardized tests, including the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT.

Before you go off to medical school where you will eat, sleep, and breathe medicine, you want to take full advantage of the time you have now to hang out with your friends. Soon enough you will be buried in books without any time to spend with your loved ones. So take advantage of the time you have now to spend all the time you can with some of your old friends.

Usually, when people go to medical school they feel that their lives differ from their friends’ lives. Most of their friends have a full-time job where they receive a steady income, yet those in medical school find themselves at a place where they need to be more frugal since they do not have that full time income flowing in.

Before meet-ups become more challenging you should use this time now to hang with some of your hometown friends. Here are some things you and your hometown friends should be sure to do before you go off to med school.

Make memories

This is number one on the list because above all you want to capture these moments, so you can look back on them with a smile on your face. Be sure to snap a bunch of pictures of you and your friends having a good time. These are the moments to make the best of because you wont always have free time to hang out. You can even include the pictures in a photo album. Although photo albums are rarely used anymore, it can be a great memento to have of you and your friends.

Catch up

If you have not seen your friends in a while, you can take this time to catch up with them. Fill your friend in on what has been going on in your life and find out about theirs. Swap some funny or entertaining stories with them and listen to any stories they may have as well. Just take the time to pick up back where you guys left off. There truly is nothing better than catching up with old friends.

Go to old hangout spots

What’s better than reminiscing on old times with your hometown friends? Go to old hangout places with your friends and joke about old times. Having old friends means having a lot of memories to share and old hangout spots. Whether it’s a local diner you love or a theater close by, take part in a blast from your past.

Explore new places

Although you have your classic old hangout spots, why not make some new traditions? Check out some new places or places you always wanted to check out, but never got the chance to. Whether it’s a local bar that just opened up or a weekly flea market, find new places to go to with your friends; you never know what places may become a new hangout spot.

Enjoy the outdoors

If the weather is nice why not call up your friends for a fun outing? You can either go to the beach or a local park, just ensure you are getting some vitamin D and enjoying the nice weather. You can either just sit and talk on a blanket outside or bring a ball to play some beach volleyball. Whatever you decide to do, you will enjoy the outdoors and your friends’ company all in one.

Host a movie night

Outings are always fun, but a night in every once in a while can also be a good time. Gather up your friends and your favorite movies, and enjoy some movie fun. You can pop some popcorn and make some yummy snacks to add to the fun.

Talk to your friends about medical school

Even though in a short period of time you will be off to medical school, you want to be sure to fill your friends in on what is likely to happen. You want to let them know that while in school you will be very busy, but that does not mean you can never hang out. Although your schedule may get trickier, you want to assure them that you will find the time to hang with them even if it may not be as often.

Going to medical school could mean you might have a hard time maintaining relationships due to your limited time and tons of works. However knowing this ahead of time allows you to be prepared for what is to come. Take the time now to strengthen your relationships and hang out with those dear to you, knowing you will not always have the time to spare. Chat with old friends and bond with them as much as you can before this huge life change.
