Bored? Broke? Feeling like there’s nothing exciting to do in Tallahassee without spending money? Go visit the library!

For those of you who are new to Tallahassee or who might be planning to attend one of the capital city’s colleges this upcoming fall, you may be unaware that there are some amazing libraries that exist outside of the ones on campus grounds. In fact, there are five public library branches, all of which stem from the main public library of Tallahassee — the Leroy Collins Main Library.

I’ve been working at Leroy Collin Library for almost five months now and it has one of the friendliest atmospheres that I’ve worked in so far. Since I started working there, I learned about the different types of programs that the library offers to the public: literacy classes for those wishing to learn the English language, heated discussions with pals over the latest book-turned-movie, and even yoga and Zumba classes! The latest thing I’ve learned: this summer, the library has a ton of special programs planned. The best part is that they’re 100 percent free!

The following is a list of events happening this Summer 2017 at the Leroy Collins Main Library, arranged by upcoming calendar date.

Summer Game Night – July 3 @ 6:30 p.m.

Bring your friends and family and join other gamers of all ages for two hours of play time at the library! Experience the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, play video games on the Wii, and make new friends over a few board games! More games are planned for the evening!

African Caribbean Dance Theatre Live Performance – July 10 @ 6:30 p.m.

The African Caribbean Dance Theatre presents a night full of powerful dance and drumming, all inspired by the African culture. The organization has been around for the past 24 years, according to their website, and hosts the annual Florida African Dance Festival right here in Tallahassee. If their performance stirs your own inner dancer or makes you want to pick up a drum, the theater’s About Page also states that they offer dance, drum, and exercise classes year-round.

Build a Greener World: Everyday Sustainability – July 15 @ 2:00 p.m.

Presented by guest speaker Tessa Schreiner, the Sustainability Manager from the Leon County Office of Sustainability and Recycling. We’re college students: we want to make a difference in the world! Schreiner will give out helpful tips on how to save on that energy bill, cut down on your water usage, and lessen your personal carbon footprint. This program will help you lead a life that embraces your love for the environment and give you ideas that you’ll be able to share with those you care about. Refreshments will also be provided!

Animal Architects – July 24 @ 6:30 p.m.

Animal Tales presents a night dedicated to the exotic animals that use their skills of construction in order to survive in the wild! According to their website, Animal Tales belief is “Tell me and I’ll forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand,” which makes me excited because that sounds like a promise that you’re going to really get involved with the animals they’re going to be bringing out. This video is a really great example of how their shows are designed and lets you get a glimpse of all the fun you are going to have if you plan to attend.

Build a Safer World: Disaster Preparedness – July 29 @ 1:00 p.m.

Presented by guest speaker Nicole King, the American Red Cross Disaster Program Manager. King will help you and your roommates/ friends/family build a safety plan in case a natural disaster hits. With hurricane season in effect, it’s good to have a plan that you and the ones you care about can rely on. Help put your parents at ease by telling them that you attended a program like this one! Added bonus: attendees can enter to win a weather radio and light refreshments are provided!

Graphic Novel Club For Adults – Last Wednesday of Every Month at 6:30 p.m. (Reoccurring)

Get together with fellow lovers of graphic novels for discussion and fun over a wide variety of graphic novels aimed at adult readers. The theme for the meet-up changes with every month, so you’ll get the chance to go through a vast array of genres and illustrators that you may not typically read or have heard about. I’ve heard good things about this club and how much fun the people who attend have. Even if graphic novels aren’t your thing, there are other book clubs available to consider joining.

There are even more events happening at the main library and also at the library branches this summer other than the ones that I listed. You can check out the locations and business hours of all Tallahassee public libraries here! Enjoy your summer, everyone!
