A Balanced Summer

By Elizabeth Hilfrank on June 10, 2017

It’s summertime. The time for sun, swimming, internships, ice cream, and spending money. Not everything in that first sentence seems to go together, but I am writing to tell you how you can do it all and look good doing it too.

The key to summertime success is the key to life in general: balance and moderation. Believe it or not, it’s not healthy to excessively exercise just as it’s not healthy to eat carbs and chocolate for every meal (as enticing as that sounds). So, how do you do it?

Let’s start with the internship and sun combination. Most internships probably take place indoors. So, you may worry that you won’t come back to school with that gorgeous summer glow you always aim for.

Don’t fret, though. You can still get the summer tan, and you can do it safely and not by laying out for 5+ hours without sunscreen on your only day off (unless you want to match the lobster on your plate). Instead, go outside on your lunch break, and take a walk when you get home before the sun goes down. The evening sun tends to be the strongest, so take advantage of that.

Those evening walks will also help with the ice cream. Exercise is crucial in the summer as the ice cream stores taunt you. This exercise does not have to be overly strenuous though! An evening walk will do the trick, or even walking home from work instead of taking public transportation (saves you money too!). Other options include yoga in the park, which is often free, or actually going swimming when you are at the beach instead of only wearing the bathing suit for show.

Speaking of the ice cream temptation, give into it every now and then. Ice cream is the refreshing treat you sometimes need on a hot summer day or after a hard day at work. It may be just the mood booster you need. It should not be the mood booster you need every day, but some days, sure.

Ice cream can also be a social thing. You want to hang out with friends, but you also don’t want to spend a ton of money, so, a $3 ice cream cone is the answer. Being social is crucial to summer success, so go for the cone.

Here’s another thing: ice cream fills you up. Instead of pretending you are full on sorbet and then snacking on junk food late at night, just go for the full-blown ice cream at normal dessert time. Your digestive system will thank you, and the sugar levels are not any better in sorbet than the dairy product.

As you can see, none of these ideas require copious amounts of money or intense structure. All you need to do is find the additional perks within the things that you already do, and you will return to school, refreshed, tan, and fit.
