Having a set place for entertaining in your apartment is something you should really strive for. Even if your apartment is small, you can still make a designated place for entertainment so you have somewhere you and your friends can hang out, and there’s a place outside your room where you can kick back and relax after a stressful or busy day of classes.

Here are some tips on how you can make space for entertainment in your apartment.

Pick your space. Whether you have a larger apartment or a tiny abode, you want to maximize the space you have and set it up so it is a comfortable and inviting entertainment area. If you have a living room you can make your entertainment space, you can dedicate the entire room to entertaining. However, you can and may have to set up your entertainment space in your bedroom, which will be fine though you will still want to have a designated space in your room for entertaining.

Wherever you’re going to set up your entertainment space, you want it to not feel cramped and consider using the TV as your centerpiece; having random posters on the wall or Post-it notes tacked up may not help you really feel relaxed and able to unwind while you entertain.

Set it up. If you’re going to set up your living room as your entertainment space, you’ll want to buy or make some sort of entertainment center or console for your TV and other devices, and invest in a comfy couch and some chairs, as well as some sort of coffee table. Think about renting furniture that will give you the most storage or not overcrowd the room.

If your entertainment space will be in your room, you should try to block off that area from your sleeping space. One way to do this is to place a dresser at the foot of your bed and place your TV on it facing the rest of the room. This way the TV and dresser sort of act like a divider and you can keep your bed as a restful area just for you.

As far as seating, if you are setting up your entertainment space in your bedroom, you’ll be working with limited room so you may want to opt for a comfy chair or two or a small couch. If the room is too small to really fit those, you can always purchase a bunch of fun and comfy pillows and a few blankets and set up space on the floor where people can sit and watch TV when you have friends over.

In both your bedroom and living room entertainment area, if you want to maximize the room’s space, you can mount your TV to the wall so you do not need to have a dresser or console crowding up the room.

Kit out. Once you have chosen your entertainment space and have set it up somewhat, it is time to figure out what sort of extras you need to really make the space ready for entertaining. How is the sound system on your TV and the overall volume in the room? Maybe you need extra speakers. Can you only afford a small TV? Maybe it is worth it to buy a projector instead and hook it up to your laptop to maximize movies from there.

Depending on your financials and how much you think you will be entertaining, you may not need to go all out for your entertainment area and invest in a bunch of extras or fancy stuff. But if you think you’ll have friends over often to watch TV, movies, Netflix, etc., you may want to get more high-tech and go big.

Once you have your space set up, it is time to think about what you will be using to entertain. Are you going for DVDs, AppleTV, Netflix, or cable? You want to have a designated space for your remotes and other TV-related items so you never have to worry about misplacing them and can easily kick back and relax.

Entertain! Now that you have your space set up, you are ready to invite some friends over to test it out and break it in. Don’t worry if your entertainment area isn’t a fancy home theater or all that special — all you really need is somewhere to sit, a watchable device, and something to watch. And of course, some yummy snacks to eat as you take some time for yourself to unwind and be entertained!
