A Party in Hell For All: UD's Fight Against Hatred
On Wednesday, May 15, a day chosen by the UD community to show and express love and acceptance for all members of the UD community was plagued by anti-gay and anti-Muslim protesters.
The religious group was engaging in hate speech towards groups of people that make up our community. They hatefully and verbally attacked women, Muslims, and the LGBTQ+ community. The religious group referred to multiple women as ‘whores’ and claimed that all Muslims and members of the LGBT+ community are going to hell.
However, the UD community united and fought back gracefully. UD protesters came out expressing their outrage at such hateful speech. UD protesters came out holding the LGBT+ flag high and wearing shirts that rejected the judgments of the religious group.
Even though I Heart UD Day was plagued and interrupted by the hatred of this unknown religious group, ironically, the events of that day brought the UD community closer together. The hatred and negativity of the religious groups fostered love into the atmosphere.
It is so beautiful how a negative political conquest resulted in a showcase of just pure love for people, regardless of their religious affiliations or sexuality. Such a showcase of passion against the protesters truly shows that the UD community has come a long way.
So at the end of the day, this year’s I Heart UD Day once again proved how much love is in the UD community.
