How to Have Fun Safely
As the semester comes to an end many students are anxious to get the fun started a little early. While it’s okay to have a night of fun every once in a while, safety is most important. Here are five ways to make the end of the semester fun and safe.
Stay in touch
Before leaving to go out for the night it may be a good idea to let someone know where you’re going, like a good friend, roommate, or anyone else you trust in case anything happens.
Don’t walk alone
If you’re going or coming from somewhere at night try not to walk alone. If you are alone, walk in well-lit areas, avoid using headphones, carry your keys in between your fingers and keep pepper spray, mace, or a pocket knife within reach. This is also a good time to talk on the phone so someone knows where you are.
Drink responsibly
If you are going to drink then limit yourself or don’t drink at all. Don’t pick up random drinks, or drinks made by others and given to you. When you do have a drink it’s important to keep your eyes on the drink at all times. If you feel even the slightest bit buzzed stop drinking.
Fun can be anything
There are plenty of other ways to have fun without partying or drinking. Movie night, pajama jams, or game night are just a few activities that are fun, safe, and don’t involve alcohol. Don’t feel like you have to say yes to something just because it seems like everyone else is doing it. Peer pressure doesn’t end in high school; if you don’t feel comfortable with something speak up and don’t follow everyone else just because you think it will make you look cool.
The most important thing is to be safe. Don’t be afraid to call someone you trust if you’re caught in a sticky situation; even if it’s your parents it’s better to be safe. Campus security can also help assist you after late hours or in certain situations where you don’t feel comfortable.
