Graduation season is fast approaching. It is an intimidating yet exciting time — time to go out into the world and utilize that degree you worked so hard to obtain and acquire.

However, as with any graduation, there are celebrations to be had! One, in particular, can be a graduation party with friends. What is the best place to have a get together with your school friends one last time before heading out into the real world? Your apartment, of course!

Here are some tips to make your apartment the scene-to-be for a graduation party.

Supplies

The proper supplies are key. To keep it easy on everyone, stay away from anything that can crack or break by dropping, i.e. glass or porcelain. What is the best alternative? Stock up on paper plates and solo cups. This way, cleanup is quick and convenient and you will not have to worry too much about an out of control mess.

Remember to stock up on koozies and coasters to reduce water damage on your couches, tables, and anywhere else. Also, don’t skimp on the napkins and paper towels!

Maximizing space

College apartments traditionally are not the most spacious living areas. Therefore, you are faced with one major final assignment before you leave campus: maximize your living space to accommodate all your guests.

The best advice for this would be to reorganize as much as possible. Try different combinations of furniture arrangements to see what creates the most space visually. It may require you to start getting rid of unneeded stuff early! Additionally, make sure there is enough seating and standing room for you and your guests. While parties are always fun and meant to be celebratory, they will not be enjoyed that much if in a cramped, tight space.

If you are going to be showing video playback of the graduation itself, try to arrange it so there’s a good seat for all to see the television. Work the room around the activities that you have planned for your party. For example, any games that involve, ahem, certain beverages.

Decorating

Decorate the entire party space in your school colors. Stop by a party store to get some “congratulations” or “congrats grads” banners as is commonplace. You and your classmates deserve to be celebrated and congratulated for all of the accolades you all have achieved.

Consider creating your own party favors to give everyone something to remember the party and your time at school by. Pass out some gift bags in school colors with some funny, celebratory, or even useful gifts. Give away small presents that friends can use now that they’re in the “real world,” such as a nice pen and a small token of your appreciation that’s customized for each friend such as a personal note or card.

Show your friends how much they have meant to you in your time at school.

Food

The age-old question: what is the best party food to serve? Ideally, finger foods or snacks which do not require much hassle or will create much mess. My personal favorites are also quite easy to prepare and serve.

Chili cheese dip requires a stick of cream cheese and a can of chili to prepare in the oven that goes great with chips. Chicken wings can be picked up at the store or quickly baked in the oven and covered with your favorite sauce. Who doesn’t love chips and guacamole? Pick up a packaged guacamole recipe that requires a couple avocados and you have simple and delicious guacamole in minutes.

If you are looking to be on more of the fancier side, or just do not want to cook at all, consider ordering out. Call the local pizza shop (they might be swamped, however), pick up some Chinese, grab some sushi, or even pick up some burgers. Feel free to ask your friends and family what they want to eat. Do not forget to get something for yourself as well. It is your party too, after all!

Drinks

Get a sense of what your guests want before they arrive. Shoot a text, send an email, go by carrier pigeon, whatever it may be! For those who prefer to keep it non-alcoholic, stock up on a few liters of soda or iced tea. If you do choose to have some beers or mixers, remember to be responsible and hold others accountable as well.

Keep it a make-it-yourself style bar. Let your guests prepare what they wish but keep a decent selection on hand for all to enjoy. Remember, make sure your guests act responsibly!

Cleaning

College apartments are not always the nicest kept places so be sure to take the time needed in advance to clean! Additionally, make it easy on yourself and your roommates to expedite the cleaning process after the party is done!
