Designing your own apartment can be tough, especially if your realm of expertise is clothing fashion rather than interior design fashion. What if I were to tell you that there is a way for you to combine your love for clothing and accessories with furnishing and decorating a house and/or apartment?

I know it sounds crazy but I promise it’s true! If you want to know how to combine fashion and interior design, read on and prepare to be amazed!

Shoes. Shoes. Shoes. Oh My God, Shoes!

I hope that everyone understands the reference to the infamous video entitled “Shoes;” if not I highly recommend checking it out here! Anyways, enough about funny YouTube videos, we are here to talk about interior design.

Shoes are art in their own way (especially if you own the shoes in Carrie Bradshaw’s closet). Vintage stilettos and/or elaborate shoes that you see on the runway (or knockoffs because we are on a #budget) are the perfect way to add some pizzazz to your home! If you have old shoes that you used to love but which have recently gone out of style, put them in plastic boxes and display them on your shelves!

Baby, Baby You Are Mannequin Me Crazy!

Before I delve into this category of interior design, I want to note that when I say mannequin, I am not talking about the plastic mannequins that are placed throughout stores. Rather, I am talking about cloth mannequins with a wooden holder.

The beauty of these mannequins is that they are extremely versatile and can be used for just about anything. You can dress up the mannequin in potential outfits (maybe you could even create an outfit of the week and change it every Sunday). Or, you could buy some push pins and decorate with trendy polaroid pictures, concert tickets, etc. to create a memory mannequin!

If You Ain’t Talking Jewelry, I Don’t Wanna Talk!

Similar to shoes, jewelry can be displayed and appear to be a work of fine art (okay, maybe not fine art, but something pretty darn close)! If you live in a place where it is not necessary to keep your jewelry locked up, then you should really try and make it into a display on your vanity, dresser, desk table, etc.

Necklaces can be hung on pretty holders that look like tree branches and create a waterfall effect. Rings can be stacked in a dish with a “stick” in the middle, allowing you to show off the gorgeous colors, stones, and designs that many rings possess. You can even do something as simple as getting a nicely designed tray and laying your jewelry out according to design or shape (or you can be more abstract and lay the pieces out with no apparent pattern)!

Magazines Everywhere But Not a Drop to Read!

I hope everyone understands the Willy Wonka reference; if not please look it up immediately (make sure you choose the classic Willy Wonka movie and not the creepy Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

Anyway, I was recently inspired when I went to the Salvatore Ferragamo museum in Florence, Italy because of the use of magazine covers as art. Specifically, they used front covers from Interview Magazine, an extremely famous magazine whose front covers were fun, colorful, and sophisticated.

Go online and search for magazine covers that you can enhance and put in a big glass frame. I’m not talking about magazine covers from People (because of all of the writing), I am talking about more vintage magazines that don’t have gossip splattered all over the front.

Thanks for the Memories, Thanks for the Memories

If you have a favorite outfit, shirt, dress, or anything from your childhood and younger years, preserve those items in a frame and collage them all over your wall. Not only does this make use of old clothes, but whenever you look at the item you will feel a sense of nostalgia and it will warm your heart.

You could take a ratty t-shirt and turn it into a beautiful piece of art just by placing it in a nice frame. You can even do this with old shoes and display them in the same way that I noted earlier in the article! By doing this, you are creating a fashionable memory wall and, as the heading notes, you will be thanking yourself for designing your apartment this way.

I hope that this article has helped out all of my fellow fashionistas in taking on the burdensome task of designing your apartment (adulting is hard, I know). The above tips are a perfect way to combine your love for fashion with your “frenemy” interior design.

There are thousands of websites where you can find cheap items to put on display (Amazon is my personal favorite) so happy shopping and happy decorating!
