Is an Online Degree Right for You?
There are many reasons why people choose to do their entire degree online. I chose to do mine online because I’m a mom to four little kids, one of whom is disabled and needs full-time care. I want to learn and create a better life for us but I can’t go to a brick and mortar classroom. Besides, I live in a city an hour away from the closest colleges.
Some people complete an online degree because they are U.S. citizens living overseas and want a degree from an accredited U.S. college. The reasons are varied, but the option of an online degree is something to consider.
Online degrees offer flexibility that just isn’t there with a traditional degree. The work is just as demanding, and there are still deadlines on all the assignments. You have a professor to help guide you and there is tons of reading and writing, just like a regular degree.
Doing an online degree isn’t cheating or taking the easy way out; in fact, online classes can be harder than going to class because the discussions take place on forums instead of in-person, and there is less guidance on assignments, and no lectures, just a lot of reading. If anything, physically going to school is the easier alternative. But it may not be the best alternative.
We all have lives, and sometimes life clashes with our dreams. The flexibility an online degree offers can be just what a busy single mom like myself working three jobs needs. Some people live in remote areas and still deserve access to education. Some people, believe it or not, prefer online classes for their own personal reasons. Everyone deserves an education, and sometimes the only way to get that education is to do a degree online.
Online degrees have gotten a bad rap because of a few illegitimate colleges offering online degrees. Check your potential school’s reputation and make sure that it is accredited before signing up for an online degree program. In checking a school’s credentials and reputation, Google is your friend. If you want to do an online degree you want to spend your money on a legitimate and accredited degree.
For someone whose main concern is flexibility, online degrees are the way to go.
