How to Paint a Frat Cooler
Greek life and painted coolers go together like peanut butter and jelly! If you’re involved in Greek life, chances are you won’t make it out of college without having to paint a cooler or two.
From football tailgates to fraternity formals, it’s important to know how to make a cooler that will still look good long after the event. Because, as all crafty sorority girls know, it is never as simple as just a coat of paint.
If you’re a perfectionist (like me), I recommend starting your cooler at least a couple of days before the event so that you don’t end staying up all night trying to finish it (also like me).
I also recommend gathering a few of your closest gal pals together so you can share your skills and supplies, and pass the time faster!
Supplies:
•A cooler that is flat on each side
•A towel
•Sandpaper (heavy and fine grit)
•Spackle and spackle knife
•White spray paint or primer
•Paint brushes and sponges
•Acrylic paint
•Sealant
•Tape and stencils (optional)
How to make the perfect cooler:
1. Create the perfect blank canvas for your paint to stick
In order to create a cooler that can still be used long after the event is over, it is crucial to start with a good foundation. Use spackle to cover up any company logos, like Igloo or Coleman, engraved in the cooler. Make them as smooth as possible and let it dry completely. You’ll also want to sand down the bumps on the cooler to create the smoothest surface possible. This will take some time, but it will be worth the effort.
2. Prime and spray paint
Next, spray a few coats of primer or white spray paint made to adhere to plastic on the cooler. The white will help your designs stand out. Do a couple of coats and make sure all sides are evenly primed. I recommend doing this step outside, so you don’t stink up your room!
3. Get creative
Now for the fun part! Use acrylic paint to make the beautiful and personalized cooler of your dreams! Check out websites such as Pinterest or whiskeyriff.com for fun inspiration and to pick up additional tips and tricks. I suggest painting one side at a time. If you are decorating your cooler inside, make sure to lay down a towel underneath to prevent paint stains (and a fine).
4. Seal it
You can use spray or brush on the sealant. I recommend using Mod Podge, Famowood, or Krylon Clear Sealer. If you choose another sealant, make sure the sealer you choose is waterproof.
5. Wait
Let the sealant dry for at least a day after your last coat.
6. Fill it up
Fill up your awesome cooler with goodies and watch the formal invites roll in!
