Benefits to Having a Dog in College
There are dog people and then there are people. If you’ve ever owned a canine companion of your own, then you know the benefits of having a furry friend around. For those who are indecisive about taking that step of responsibility, here are a few things to consider in your decision to raising your own fur baby.
Dogs keep you healthy
Dogs are a great way to keep you active. They require a lot of attention, therefore keeping up with them will help to keep you active as well. If you have a local park consider taking your pup there to play, or even in a nice neighborhood, take them for a walk. Dogs also keep you healthy mentally. They are great pets to keep around for nights when you stay in and you won’t feel so lonely.
Dogs teach you responsibility
Dogs are a great way to teach yourself some responsibility — especially in college. However, feeding them, taking them out, and just being there for them are difficult tasks if you don’t have the time. Be sure that you are capable of giving your dog the attention it needs. They will love you regardless but let’s be honest, no one wants to see a sad puppy.
This will also give you the sensation of feeling needed, which is rewarding in itself. Try to not leave them alone for so long. As dogs get anxious waiting for you to come home, they tend to tear things up. Some dogs require training. So make sure you are prepared to spend some time potty training/kennel training.
Dogs become your companion
Dogs are awesome to keep around when you are feeling lonely. Coming home to a wagging tail (maybe even a bark of approval) is the best way to be greeted after a long day of classes or work. Cuddling up with your pup is also another benefit. Who doesn’t love that puppy breath? Dogs will be your best friend throughout everything and love pleasing you.
There are many other benefits to owning a dog throughout college. These are just some of the few I have encountered while raising my chocolate lab for the last two years. Overall, yes taking care of a dog is hard. But if you are up to the challenge it can be a really good decision. College is rough enough as it is. Why not have a friendly face to help keep you sane?
