If you’re a college student who’s tried to decorate your apartment or home, then you know that décor can get bizarrely expensive. Even the most simple coffee table adornments and wall hangings can cost a small fortune. Having an apartment or home with more than just plain white walls and drab furniture sometimes seems like it’s the only option.

But it’s not! There are plenty of ways to decorate your place without handing over an arm and a leg. One of the best — and most fun — ways to do so is to get your DIY on. Even if you’re not a gifted creative, there are tons of easy DIY decorations that you can do to spruce up your college living space. Plus, doing creative activities is a great way to beat stress – which you more than likely have a lot of as a college student.

That being said, here are four easy DIY projects that you can work on to decorate your apartment or house!

Confetti tray

Perfect for holding remotes, random knickknacks, or your cereal on Sunday morning while you watch cartoons (no shame), this confetti tray is a simple way to brighten things up in your place. Keep it on your coffee table to bring some color to your living room or keep it on your desk to house random school supplies.

There’s plenty of room for being creative on this one when it comes to both where you put it and how you do it — you can pick whatever colors you want! Find instructions here.

If you’ve never touched a power tool in your life and only have 30 minutes to spare, then this is the project for you! All that you’ll need is a cheap wire basket, a hammer, some wood, a little bit of spray paint and wood stain, and staples, and you’ve got yourself a brand new table!

Put it at your bedside and top it with a cute lamp, or use it in your living room and top it with some succulents. Whatever you do with it, this DIY table will bring flair to your home. Here are the instructions.

Wine bottle lights

Reduce, reuse, recycle, right? Instead of tossing out all those empty wine bottles, save them and make the cutest, cheapest light arrangement that you’ve ever seen. And aren’t white Christmas lights the coziest thing ever? Switch it up and fill up other types of bottles, and choose different colored lights. The possibilities are endless! It’s pretty self-explanatory, but instructions can be found here.

Flower wall

The majority of college students rent their living quarters and can’t put nails in the walls to hang up pictures. Bummer, right? Luckily, hanging pictures isn’t your only option! This simple, dainty flower wall is incredibly easy and inexpensive to make. Dollar stores are a haven for fake flowers, so stop by one near you and grab a couple of bouquets in all of your favorite colors. Then, grab a hot glue gun and some clear fishing line, and you’re pretty much good to go. Find instructions here.

Glitter outlet covers

If you’re a fan of glitter, then you’re going to love this one! This is a simple way to make your apartment or home shine — literally! Just cover the plate (while it’s off of the wall, of course) with mod podge, then glitter, then mod podge again, making sure that everything is dry before you start a new layer of anything. Then, poke out the holes for the screws to go into. And you’re done! Note: You might want to buy some outlet covers from Home Depot if you’re renting so that you can replace your blinged-out ones when you move out. Instructions can be found here.

Fired ink art

For me, wall art is one of those things that I love to have, but consider to be kind of a luxury because I don’t have the $50 or more to spare on it. But who would have thought that making your own could be so easy? Grab a spare picture frame and remove the glass from it. Then, drop alcohol inks onto the glass and add in some rubbing alcohol. Then comes the most fun part: lighting the alcohol on fire! This causes the ink and alcohol to swirl around and create beautiful, unique designs. And it takes under five minutes! Instructions can be found here.

In conclusion, it doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to add some pizzazz to your apartment or home. All it takes is a little bit of creativity and a few inexpensive supplies. Crafting these six easy DIY projects for your apartment is a simple way to make a big transformation.
