5 Things I Learned as a Former Homeschooler Going to College

By Brooke Smoke on March 12, 2017

Before I started college, I was a homeschooler. And though I went to public school for three years, the vast majority of my life and experience was that of a homeschooled kid. The transition from homeschool to a college was crazy and though I am a strictly online student, I think my experience was definitely similar to what other homeschoolers go through.

Here are five things I learned as a former homeschooler transitioning into college.

1. College is like learning a new language.

My application process was crazy. The jump from graduation to application was a scary one and researching schools and learning all this new college lingo was probably the most difficult part of that. I actually ended up missing a registration deadline just because everything was so confusing to me. And maybe I’m just naive to the ways of the world, but it took me quite some time and caused quite a lot of stress just to get things set up.

Homeschoolers, (and everyone in general), expect to learn through mistakes. Expect confusion. Just be patient with yourself and you will get to know how college works.

2. Advisors are life savers.

I’m going to be quick on this one because the above sentence already sums it up pretty nicely. If you are confused, absolutely do not be afraid to call an advisor. They will save your life one day.

3. There are more options than you think.

I have a lot of obligations at home and not a lot of willpower to constantly drive to a physical school. But guess what? That’s okay! Because online college is a totally valid option. One that, for a homeschooler, is just about as near of a seamless transition as you can get. I still pick my own hours, I still wear my pajamas to school (just kidding we don’t actually do that — not all of us), and I still get to spend time with my family.

If you don’t think traditional college will work for you, don’t give up! There are other options.

4. Teachers are an interesting species.

This may be strange to public schoolers, but it is very odd to me to be taught by a whole new variety of people. My education has always been very tailored to me and I’m very used to a hands-on learning style. Most of the time I pursued school on my own. I had help from my mom and other sources, but I was usually pretty in-charge of my own lesson schedule.

College presents me with the challenge of experiencing different teaching styles, different personalities, and different preferences with every teacher. This is actually not at all a bad thing. It’s just a whole new world. I can only imagine how much more so it would be for those in a classroom setting!

The thing I’ve learned is to pay very close attention to what your teacher expects from you. Read the syllabus, take notes on his/her preferences, make note of any announcements or changes. Not every teacher is the same.

5. It will be okay!

College is “a whole new world,” but really, it’s not so bad. Sure, I have mental breakdowns whenever exam time rolls around. But, honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. College is a big deal and I’ll suffer through many more exams because, though it’s hard, I’m working towards my future.

So there you have it! The five things I learned transitioning from homeschool to college.
