DIY Shirt For Broke AF College Students
Tired of sifting through your closet wishing you had something new, knowing full well you’re broke AF and on a college student budget?
You need this DIY shirt under $5. With a little time and effort, you can turn your old t-shirts into a bad-ass unique piece of art; your only limit is the scope of your creativity and your stamina. So, without further ado, I’ll show you how to embroider a quick DIY Rick and Morty themed pattern.
What you’ll need:
Any of your old t-shirts/shorts
A pencil
Now let’s get started:
First sketch out your image or phrase on the shirt using a pencil; it doesn’t have to be perfect. Crack out the embroidery loop, and separate the inner and outer loops. Place the smaller circle on the inside of the shirt right underneath the sketch and place the larger circle on top. Fit the pieces together and tighten the loop. Remember: righty tighty, lefty loosey.
Next, we cut a strand of embroidery thread in your preferred color; as for thickness, I tend to use three strands out of the six; however, it is completely up to you. The thickness of the strands affects how bold the image will be. Time to thread the needle! Tie off one end of the thread; with a steady hand and possibly some saliva, try to thread the end of the strand through the eye of the needle.
Let’s start officially embroidering, shall we? Working from left to right, start on the “g.” Position the needle under the hoop and penetrate the fabric bringing the needle towards you, towards the surface. To complete your first stitch, follow the pattern, and approximately 1 cm from where you started, push the needle through the fabric like so and pull down.
Continue onward until you complete the sample pattern or your own! With a little bit of determination and creativity, you can add a little unique flair to your otherwise banal clothes! Enjoy your DIY shirt under $5!
