The International Football Association Board, soccer’s international body, has approved the usage of goal line technology, after incidents at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and recently at the Euro 2012 tournament held in Poland and Ukraine.

According to a report from the BBC, the goal line technology will not be used for other decisions by referees, but only on the issue of determining whether a ball passed the goal line when trying to score a goal. “For me as Fifa president it became evident the moment what happened in South Africa in 2010,” said FIFA’s president Sepp Blatter according to a report from Britain’s Press Association. “I have to say ‘thank you, Lampard’. I was completely down in South Africa when I saw that it really shocked me, it took me a day to react. It happened again in Ukraine, and Ukraine can still not believe it now.”

The English Premier League, one of the most famous leagues in the world, is hoping to have it implemented during the next season, according to a report from the BBC, saying according to the BBC that they wanted the technology as soon as possible. “The Premier League has been a long-term advocate of goal-line technology,” read a statement from the League according to the BBC. “We welcome today’s decision by IFAB and will engage in discussions with both Hawk-Eye and GoalRef in the near future with a view to introducing goal-line technology as soon as is practically possible.”

In addition to the decision to allow the usage of goal line technology, additional decisions were made, including the removal of a ban on women wearing headscarves during games, allowing more Islamic countries to take part in competitions, according to a BBC report.
