Oreo Hot Chocolate: Something for Everyone
I hate Oreo cookies. While Oreos are the best selling cookie in the U.S. nation with 450 billion sold, I am not one of the consumers who contributes to those numbers.
To elaborate, I just can’t stand regular Oreos. I am more than okay with the Lemon Thin variety, Oreos with Mint Creme, Birthday Cake Oreos, and even Caramel Apple Oreos that were only available for a short time.
While in my adulthood I have developed an allergy to peanuts, when I was a little kid (and did not have this allergy), I used to dip the regular Oreos in peanut butter and ruined many a peanut butter jar in my Abuela’s house. The regular variety of Oreos has never been quite enough for me.
Even if I can’t dip regular Oreos in peanut butter anymore, I avoid them: it’s as simple as that.
But, then I saw a commercial for Dunkin’ Donuts’ new Oreo Hot Chocolate. I made a face in disgust when I first saw the thing. I even commented to my best friend that I would be interested in the drink when it was a ‘Mint Oreo Hot Chocolate.’
What I couldn’t deny, though, was that even if I am Starbucks girl, Dunkin’ has some of the absolute best hot chocolate I’ve ever had. So, maybe the fact that I’m not an Oreo fan would allow me to offer a less pro-Oreo-biased opinion of the hot chocolate’s flavor.
With honesty as my first priority, I went ahead and ordered my Oreo Hot Chocolate. I ordered it at the Dunkin’ Donuts located at 227 Main Street in Madison, NJ. I was able to get a small but important student discount by showing my FDU ID. The staff was incredibly nice and handled my order with care. They were especially patient with my mother who accompanied me and the fact that it took her a bit longer to order since English is not her first language. For that, I cannot thank them enough.
The piping hot Oreo-flavored drink melted the whipped cream on top within seconds and then offered a ‘foam’ of sorts. Being notorious for burning my tongue on everything from coffee to soup, I decided to let my drink cool for a bit. I did take a small sip and so far, I was enjoying the whipped cream foam.
Once the whipped cream foam had completely dissolved into my hot chocolate, it was finally at a temperature where I wouldn’t burn my mouth.
The Oreo-based beverage had a warm, strong chocolate taste; somewhat reminiscent of an Oreo cookie. But, the overall flavor was completely unique with subtle hints of the well thought out hot chocolate mixture.
Dunkin’ could have taken a pre-made hot chocolate mix and added some Oreo chunks or Oreo cream and called it a day. But, this was a well-thought out flavor. For someone who is by no means a fan of classic Oreo cookies to enjoy the hot chocolate, I have to say: Well done, Dunkin’.
I would rate this an 7 out of 10 only because I’m not a classic Oreo fan to begin with but I would certainly order this again.
