Attention Tallahassee Animal Lovers

By Tiffany Battle on October 6, 2016

This Sunday, October 9, 2016, the Leon County Humane Society is hosting a fundraiser at Cascades Park called “Walk and Wag”.

Tallahassee animal lovers, this event is for you (and your fur-babies). This is LCHS’s second annual dog walk fundraiser, and their aim is to both raise money for the care of their animals and the operation of their programs, and to bring awareness to the “reality of animal abuse and neglect”. They hope to show Tallahassee residents what we can do as a community to fight this problem.

As of August 2016, there were 3,685 total incoming animals at the shelter, 3,592 outgoing. Only 1,975 of those outgoing animals were adopted, 450 were reclaimed, 99 were transferred to other locations, and 3 were Pilot Community Cats. This means a good chunk of the animals were either euthanized, died of natural causes, or went missing. Unfortunately, animal shelters can only house so many animals at one time , so there is a strong reliance on adopters who will be a forever home to these animals.

This event will not only be fun for the entire family, but also a chance to educate your children about the needs of animals in our community. The theme is “Humane Heroes” and everyone is encouraged to bring their four-legged family members and come dressed as their favorite superheroes. “Humane Heroes” will be awarded to those individuals who have made a positive impact in the lives of the animals in our community. You can complete missions to receive your “Humane Hero” cape and a special certification signed by City Commissioner Scott Maddox.

Chuy’s is donating a delicious taco bar and Kona Ice will be there as well. And of course it wouldn’t be a real party without the fur-babies themselves, so LCHS will also have plenty of pets up for adoption! If you don’t currently have a pet to “walk and wag” with, you can walk with one of the shelter’s animals.

No registration fee is required to walk in the event, but participants should try to raise a minimum of $25. The easiest way to raise money is by going to and creating your own personal donation page under the Walk and Wag event. However, you can receive in-person donations, but you have to fill out a donation form for each one. If you raise $50 or more, you’ll get your very own Walk and Wag T-shirt, and some “hero gear”.

The event will be from 1 to 4 P.M. For a little of your time and money, you can make a real impact in the lives of these precious animals who deserve a chance at a happy life, and you’ll have an enjoyable time in the process.
